Rodent Control

"Front page" story on Yahoo! about rat overpopulation on Rat Island in Alaska:

I also happen to live in an area where mice and rats are known to be. Alas, I don't have to ever worry about them coming (or at least staying) in my home. Why?

Because I have the best possible form of rodent control there is. Who needs complex traps or toxic chemicals? Or else pest control "experts" who are at their wits end. You don't need any of that. Just get yourself some of what I have and the problem will be solved.

Bean (left) and Turbo (right), I am pretty sure will have no trouble handling any luckless rodent that might happen to venture into my place.

And yes, they are both "fixed" and up-to-date on all their vaccinations. And likewise, I have gloves and carpet cleaner just-in-case.

Not to be mean at all,I happen to love cats, but the Bean and Turbo look like they were built for lounging. Not speed. But live mice have been known to get them moving.

I have three neighbors who have cats, around six in all. They let them out in the day, and bring them in after dark. All are spayed/neutered, collared, etc.

I have seen one mouse in my house in the five years I've been here, and nary a reptile.

Beautiful cats, Des.

They are indoor-only cats. Here are some better pictures of them. Laying flat on the table makes them look more "flopsy" than they really are.

I'd move onto the movie set of "Ben" (after strangling The King of Pop, of course) before I'd let a cat in my house. And I have no rodent problems.

Mice are usually a problem when the weather turns colder, they are trying to find a nice warm place to set up shop. Mice have nothing to do with how wealthy you are or how clean you are they are just a fact of life.

BTW: We have two cats. One is the hunter the other likes to watch. They have gotten a couple in the last year which I am greatful for.

I love cats but I do believe they belong indoors for many reasons. I read on CBC's website a few years ago that domestic cats kill approximately 20 million birds each year in Michigan alone. Reason enough to keep our furry little friends safe and indoors.

Agreed :thmbsp: Ours have never been outside. I also think they make much better pets when all they know is your homel :D

DesLab, so sorry,my comment was more in jest than meant as the rule. They ARE gorgeous. And they do spread out laying down. I only wish the one here was so pretty. We USED to have pretty cats. Miss Kitty is common, calico and a screamer. And I love cats, but this one....I like her.
And I'm gonna go with SpartanManor as I am a caregiver for my Mother here in Michigan MUCH against my will. I would rather her cat ALWAYS stay indoors. She gets one hour in the early morning out and that is it. I've had my tender heart broken with the disemboweled baby bunnies, mice, squirrells and chipmunks the little witch leaves for me to bury or put out of their misery. I hate it. Miss Kitty stinks. Not smell, her habits.

I never knew of a mouse problem until I moved to Wyoming where I had a 200-plus collection of Steiff, rare mohair tiny hand made animals from Germany my Grandmother collected for me circa 1950-68. This was before those fantastic snap=on plastic tubs. When I opened the box years later, what was LEFT of my loved beyond belief childhood collection was worse than the clean ups after Miss Kitty. I was broken hearted beyond help over those.

My darling Daddy during the two years before his death was FINALLY awarded WWII 100% disability, with back pay. He was the first into Hiroshima and Nagasaki the day after and Nagasaki was still burning....
He let me find each and every one from a German man on ebay...and I have them in a giant glass case, safe from vermin. $6 grand to replace them. He loved them as much as I. And he bought the giant wooden glass case for them. Try to get them NOW mice!
In Montana Hante virus is a FEARED problem, with many deaths even, and many companies deal with vermin control there.

Miss Kitty can kill mice inside,no problem, but i still have such a tender heart. Have you ever looked at them? They have little tiny feets and whiskers and ears...but I hate the mice.
Thats okay,I have a coon family I feed a loaf of peanut butter sandwiches to every night. I figure they have kin to take care of,same as we do. And I lay out about 50lbs of nuts a week for the squirrells. Its my happiness. Besides good speakers.

Not to be rude, but....DON'T FEED THE WILDLIFE!!!!!!! they are not pets!!!! They didn't need your help before you came along.

Mike

We have three strays or feral cats that dine here regularly, but for mice I count on my friends Victor1 and Victor2, found in any hardware store.

Exactly. This nonsense about feeling sorry for them because they can't experience the outdoors is simply projection of human feelings. Especially in more urban areas they are much safer indoors.

One of mine did find a mouse once in the house. He was always so gentile and docile, even when intinctively chasing this critter. He didn't kill it, just held it in his mouth. I picked him up and carried him to the door, opened it and then shook him and the mouse fell out of his mouth and ran off on its merry way. Rodent control and no one hurt. :D

What if they'd rather be cats?:scratch2:
Once a cat is an indoor pet, it ceases being a "cat." It has no preference--that is a projected human emotion. Its entire life is artificial and based on the environment you provide. It continues to exhibit whatever intinctual behavior it has (play hunting, scratching, grooming) within the confines of that environment. As long as it is fed and is not made to suffer, it will live a happy and healthy life, and a much longer one than if it were allowed outside. (Unless, for example, you live on a farm).

Cats are okay, but I'll be damned if I'm going to have a box of clay with turds and piss in it inside my house! They track that **** everywhere. Just because they lick themselves until they can see themselves in their fur doesn't mean they are clean animals! I'll take my stinky Boston Terrier anyday over a cat...at least he shits outside! On top of being a great dog, he farts audibly with duration all the time, which is hilarious! Show me a cat that can do that!

Plus, show me a cat that can do this!

We had our two cats for 18 years. For the first 15 years no visitor could tell we had cats, and we're not neat freaks. Of course we were very diligent about keeping the litter box clean. I could nuzzle my face into my cats' fur and it was as clean and soft as could be. I love dogs, but after I pet them I have a residue on my hands if it's been too long since the last bath--yuk. I'd say cats are definitely cleaner and if the owners are responsible, the house will be, too.
