Rohde & Schwarz HMP4040 Programable power supply !!!

Well I got the HMP4040 in. Not packed as well as I would like as the box was just about the size of the unit. And this thing is heavy for it size, it has huge toroidal transformer.

Well while unpacking it I heard rattle inside the unit. probably the power switch I thought. so I opened it up to investigate. The chassis must have taken a fall with caused the broken power switch and chassis damage. I don't think it happened in shipping as the for sale pics showed some dents and bends.

Here is the part that was rattling around.......

This is where it connects.......... and you can see the frame bent in the left corner.

I think I am going to email them and see if they can send me a power switch for it.

And an impromptu video I poorly made to show it is working, at first it was set to 230 volts and just the screen lit up all white, then I realized it was set to the wrong voltage and it power dup correctly. I also thought something was wrong the second time I powered it up to make the video as the original voltages on the screen were all 0 with 50ma current, so when I powered it up again and saw everything set to 1 volt and 1 amp current I thought something was wrong but that is the default settings.

Super happy I think I got a great deal !!!

There is a metal ID tag on the top that says it was property of Hutchinson Technology, I guess part of TDK . Pretty cool I think.

So I did some cleaning today, not sure what that brown stuff was but some Emulso Corp "Grease Gobbler" on a tooth brush got it off fast.

Im letting some Goo Gone to soak on some adhesive to soften it up.

Looks pretty good so far. Almost like new, except for the bent left bottom corner of the plastic face plate. I also sent an e-mail to R&S to see if they would sell me a power switch.

Very cool and a great piece of gear! All supplies are independent which means you can run them in series too.

So you can go up to a max of +/-64V which will cover most power amplifier repairs. An awesome unit at 10A max too.

I recently had all six of my SMPS supplies used at the same time when working on Pioneer SX-1250 power amp stages on the bench.

I found the Hutchinson Technology facebook page and posted a pic of it. I guess they called them "rectifiers" and this one was #66 on the line .

The guy told me that they had pallets of them and they were going for under 25$ a piece two years ago!!! The plant closed down that housed them.

Wonder if my seller got the whole pallet !

Nope, they make cleaning chemicals here in Buffalo NY. I have had all types of sales men come in with national de greasers try to sell me their product . There is an area on my cooks line where the charbroiled builds up a black grease on the stainless steel wall. They test their product there and they say" ok now wait a minute then wipe it off" it barely cuts the grease. So then I go get the Grease Gobbler and say, I use this, I spray it on and the grease instantly drips down the wall, and with in seconds I wipe it down to a clean stainless steel. Needles to say they are dumbfounded at how fast and good it works and left with no sale lol.

Got an email from the NY,MA,CT USA manager at R & S to know when I purchased it and its serial number so they can give me a quote.
I told them its original owners were Hutchinson Technologies.

So we'll see how much they might charge .

Hey John, great to see you popping in

It can go up to +/- 64 and 4X 32 so 128v but at lower amps of course. I use mine regularly at 90v on three channels daisy chained.
Great piece of gear indeed. Very precise. the current limiter is prompt and saves my arse many times. Goes down into milliamps. Worth its weight in gold for most bench needs. I keep a second as backup.
They have few other models but this one is the most versatile.

And then there's these old beauties I have from the vacuum tube days ...

This Krohn-Hite weighs a ton and is perfect for triode testing.

The Kepco uses 2 6550 vacuum tubes as regulators. I love the smooth multi turn hand crank for adjusting the output voltage down to the mV.

Both are quality pieces from back in the day.
