Rotel RD-870 not playing tape?

It doesn't play, the buttons and lights are a bit finicky, yet there is nothing visibly wrong internally as far as I can tell. Fast forward and reverse sometimes work, but most of the time they doesn't.
What's going on? Has anyone had any experience with this?
