ROTEL RX-855, very low sound

ROTEL RX-855 has very low sound.
I have to turn volume to max to hear faint music.
I think it's just getting that from the input source directly.
Is the amp out?
What else to check?
I tried different inputs, FM and all behave the same.

Are the jumpers are connected in the back (Pre Out/Main In)?

Mine sounds OK, but it makes a low pitched moan for a second, every twenty minutes or so.

Hopefully the OP figured out the problem three years ago.
I hope he's not still searching for the fix.
