RS3000 refurbish

So like all RS3000's these had completely rotted out surrounds, but all drivers checked out and were original. The clear woofers cleaned up nice. I didn't expect these to sound great, they don't they sound good though, and with a frequency sweep they actually hit 45 Htz pretty well, but have a pretty significant dip from 51-70.

However...I've never painted speakers before, and I liked the floating grill look, they have a "modern" to the 80's look, but oh that ugly cheap wood vinyl wrap!

So I painted them and I'm super happy with the look! High Gloss, with a Gloss clear coat for that piano shine. These might get you to look twice now!

Just to be certain I have it straight in my head, you didn't remove the vinyl but actually painted it? I didn't think paint would stick to that stuff. Looking back, there are many things I would have handled differently.

Oh by the way, looks great.

Weird that the crossover is at 4k. Seems a bit high and means that the woofer has a lot of work to do. They do look good after the paint job.

I’m not sure the crossover is at 4K, when I pulled it out it was glued upside down to the plug plate so that wasn’t getting tampered with, not worth my time. The inductor on it was pretty beefy though

I got that info from a Google search. Not sure which exact page at the moment...

Spray paint worked pretty well, I kept it to light coats, and the fake wood grain shows through just a tiny bit which I don’t mind

They’re growing on me, audio wise. Good for horns. Peggy Lee radio sounds good on them and they’re good low level listening speakers.

They also are pretty good at “disappearing” and are easy to get to sound like the music comes from between them

Maybe because of the rounded front but they’re wide too and you can almost be directly between them and still get almost all the highs

I honestly think they sell for $5 at yard sales and Goodwill because they're just so darn ugly...I mean, they are really ugly speakers!

I work at a high school and a teacher walked by my office and said "They're beautiful!" so I'm thinking everyone who owns these needs to paint them!

Here. First paragraph. If that information is correct...
This article says their resonance is 55 Htz, that's at least not accurate with these. I performed several free air parameters measurements on these, before re-foaming the Fs was hitting 27 Htz, but that was basically no surround, once they had new foam on them the Fs was at 43 and 38 Htz. And once installed in the cabinets using a tone generator and just my ears 5 feet away they have a boom at 35-49 Htz and then drop out quite a bit from 50-almost 70 Htz.

I think they'd pair really well with a smaller sub, like an 8" that could fill that gap rather than one that takes

This article is nice though, it makes me want to run some more tests. Maybe I'll disconnect the tweeter and do another sweep through the x-over to see where it's running or if it's working at all

That article and this thread makes me want to pull out the RS 5000s I have sitting in storage and refoam and paint them.
