RSL Elans

Came across an aged pair of RSL Elans $19, they are in fair shape. The rear passive woofers need refoaming and I understand thats not an easy job but doable. The problem is one of the white woofers is shot.

Are there any affordable replacements available?

Pix to follow later tonight.

I'm interested in this thread also as I have a pair of RSL 3600 monitors that look like they use the same drivers with the L pads etc as in these Elans only in a smaller cabs.
I've read they were trying to copy JBLs so maybe a similar JBL woofer would work.Maybe an expert on here knows.
I replaced my tweeters with Vifas from Parts Express and while they fit right and work fine they don't sound the same as the originals. The RSL tweeters have the foam surrounds like JBLs also.
I see RSLs on Craig's list now and then and would like to pick up a pair just for parts.
If you got that pair for 19 bucks you could afford almost anything and still be way ahead.Good speakers IMO.

Have you pulled the bad woofer out of the cabinet to test if the voice coil is open? Does the cone move freely or does it scrape, or worse yet is it jammed in place? I believe the white cone woofers were made for RSL by Pyle and it takes a lot of power to fry one. A loose wire connection is more likely than one of those woofers being blown! The hole in the back for the passive radiator could always just be covered with wood as a sealed cabinet would tighten up the bass a bit. Or you could put a port in the wood blocking plate if you could figure out the proper dimensions to tune it.

As for the 3600's, I believe the original dome tweeter used was sourced from SEAS. I also blew one after I fried the tweeter capacitor in the cross-over and replaced it with a Vifa dome unit that still sounds good but sounds different as mentioned. After Gordon W's post from the other day I think I'd go for one of these next go round:

RSL speakers rarely get parted out on Fleabay, so looking for original replacement parts is difficult even here in the Los Angeles area where they were assembled and sold.

It does look like there is some yellowing around the dust cap of the blown woofer. Is this an indicator that something might have heated up?

LP- I promise to leave those alone until you finally give in and take them home...... :D

Correct on both points :D. The left woofer is snow white and works, the right woofer is yellowed and does not work. The right speaker looks like it may have suffered water damage, maybe left out in the rain.

I have not removed the bad woofer, it does appear to move freely.

This is why I didn't buy them. Although it may be a reason to buy them? :scratch2:
