RT-707's auto stop

i have an annoying problem on my RT-707.

it would not auto stop, which should be 2-3 seconds once tape loose tension(end or broken).

in stead, both reel spin at very high speed and the end of tape striking the head block for about 15 sends then stop. leaving a few inches of taps on the floor every time.

it seems nothing wrong with the mechanism by visual looking. springs and pivot moving fine.

i noticed it would be stop within 3-5 seconds after first stop by stimulating it by playing without any tape. that means first auto stop take 15+ seconds, then subsequently within 3-5 sends if these stimulation take place shortly. however, this is useless as it would not happen in reality.

any suggestion?

thanks

It sounds like the "end of tape sensor" pivot point needs to be cleaned up and new silicone damping grease applied. The point where the sensor wire pivots inside the machine is coated with a very thick silicone damping grease, similar to the grease used in a turntable's tonearm damping system to lower the arm slowly onto a record. It's purpose is to slowly lower the sensor wire when the tape runs out or breaks. Over time this grease hardens up too much and inhibits the sensor wire's ability to move down and shut the machine off. If you clean all of the old grease out and re-load it with the silicone damping grease your problem will most likely be solved.

If you don't have new silicone damping grease to replace the old stuff then you can carefully clean around the pivot point with some alcohol or contact cleaner without completely removing all of the existing damping grease. Don't clean it too well or you will loose the damping effect of the grease, and you need some damping there to prevent the sensor wire from moving too quickly and causing false shut-offs. Hopefully this will restore the action of the sensor wire enough to shut the machine off at the end of the tape.

i agree, the damping is just too strong or the spring become weak.

i will clean them and see what would happen.

thanks.
