I decided it was time to fix the pair RTR 88d speakers I picked up a couple of years ago. They look great by the low end is, well, absent / just doesn't sound right. I assume it is a cap issue, but I could not find anything on these speakers anywhere. Anyway, I just wanted to throw some info out there and get some opinions on what to use for capacitors.
These are really well built and sealed up tighter than Fort Knox. You have to go in through the woofer to find the crossover - what there is of it. the woofer comes up after you wiggle it a bit with a screw driver. There is some tenacious gray adhesive under it. The woofer, appears small, from the outside, but the square magnet on the back of that sucker is ginormous. These are stuffed full of fiberglass. Once you remove that and get to the crossover, you are met with 4 screws, Removing them does not seem to release the crossover - I assume there is more of that gray adhesive holding that down.
The crossover is simple. There are 2 Callins NP electrolytic capacitors in parallel, a pot, and a 230V Littelfuse 815 series. The caps are a 2.5uf 50V and a 6uf 50V. So a couple of questions:
-What would be a good replacement brand for these?
-Stick with electrolytic or go for foil caps?
-Any harm in replacing these two caps with a single 8.5 uf?
Any other thoughts from people who may or may not have delved into RTRs?
