RTR HPR-12 (Non/Pre magnum

Hi all,

I just picked up this pair of RTR HPR-12 and have a few questions.
I bought these knowing they would need some work, its something I have wanted to try for a while now and am hoping you will be able to give me some guidance.

I have a few questions to start

1. This is a simple one but on the rear dials where is neutral? The dial goes from 0-10 with the 12 o'clock being number 5.

2. When cleaning the wood veneer I assume I can use a damp cloth with a little soap if needed. Is the same true with the woofers? They have what looks like specs of mud on them

3. On the topic of veneer I have taken a photo of the sides and top, there is no dents or ding is it possible to refinish it without replacing the veneer?

4. I knew buying these that the tweeter was wrong and was prepared to have to replace it. What I don't know is what model the original was. If there is an equivalent priced option that offers some sonic improvement i'd be interested in that too, bear in mind though I am in Australia and price can be wildly inflated here. Alternatively if I could get some idea of what to look for in a replacement in terms of frequency and whatever else that would be good too.

5. Is there any other cheap improvements I should make while I am at it?

1. The instructions were to star at 12 and dial it back until you get the best balance in your listening room if needed. In some rooms max is just fine
2. I wouldn’t get the woofers wet. They are paper, and you could try using a brush to clean them.
3. You could refinish the veneer. Just don’t sand through it. Some just used Howard’s restore a finish to improve the condition of the veneer.
4. The original tweeter is a very low cost Motorola piezo tweeter. Only replace it with a Motorola or CTS piezo. if there is a crossover for the tweeter I wouldn’t replace it with a piezo. I would find an affordable dome tweeter that would fit, have the proper frequency response, along with similar sensitivity to the original piezo.
5. Change the crossover capacitors and bypass the circuit breakers.
