Running new members off

I learned early on to walk on egshells. The only thing that really frustrates me is the protection of snake oil. However, I understand what's going on. This is a "for profit" site. When you're goring their ox, it will not be allowed.

I said a few years ago that if this was an auto enthusiast site we would have members wondering how to get wider tires for their 20 year old honda civic rubbing shoulders with guys bragging about how much they love the handling of their Bugatti Chiron but they love the color of their aston martin vanquish.

i.e. there is really not all that much in common.

The new member doesn’t have the experience and other members will comment in a way that turns the new member off.

This is what I have been seeing more of lately.

But then again, there are about 300,000 more people here than when I joined, so there are bound to be more rude folks as well.

Rob

The knowledge base here hands down cannot be beat and if you have a technical problem sooner or later someone will come along to help you out. I've had it happen and have seen it happen for other members many times. AK is also a community that will personally rally around a member in need like no other place I've been but socially, if you have a chip on your shoulder it's best practice to just check it at the door.

....

.....What has started to happen lately is those in power will delete conversations a new member is having with a subscriber in a thread.

.....

You may already know...that subscribers have the ability to delete any thread they initiate. Any posts from other members would be gone.

I have noticed it as well lately, and it is a bit concerning as I have recommended people who are new, often young and inexperienced in audio maters to this forum. I can't but help wonder if it is a sign of the collective stress that the world is going through at the moment leading to shorter fuses and a bit less tolerance.

But to reinforce the point, by far and away the members here are helpful and generally more than willing to guide people through things.

In the last 2 - 3 years, I've seen many new accounts purely asking prices, and 'discretely' offering items for sale.

1- didn't bother to read AK forum rules.

2- too lazy to do a basic internet search, lots of info out there.

They deserve to be shown the door.

I understand this and this is why I have tried to be so careful on my comments. There is a problem. The problem is still there. I have had another subscriber reach out to me about the problem also. That is why I brought this up.
Rich: That subscriber has told me I can pass on his information to you if you wish to hear it. Let me know and I will PM you the information.

I've been on a lot of forums over the years.

This place IS different. The level of behavior expected is higher than most places, and folks generally step up.

It's also a good sampling of our fellow tech bench jockeys. We get old and cranky, have bad weeks or months, and don't always get along with "people".
Some of us are way too full of ourselves as well. Some folks cannot and have never taken criticism. Some folks are straight up assholes. Some will drop everything and spend 4 hours helping you chase an issue. Sometimes it's the same person.

That being said, anyone who gets scared away by one of our less graceful members maybe didn't spend much time before they ran. The generosity and community here is unmatched elsewhere. I encourage them to stick around a bit and try to ignore the folks having a bad moment . We might all be there someday and need the same.

I dont post often to these types, but I have a question....

what threads or types of threads are these? My AK experience is simplified, for as long as I have been here I dont have many posts (but working harder at it I promise) and I only REALLY goto the true tech threads and general/wheels way down bottom. In general I see threads lock down, usually over the political topic du jour but the reasons are generally (no pun) clear.

I have never seen a tech thread like in pioneer someone asking how to set bias, get locked down so that made me curious. while some of our tech people are 'on the spectrum' so to speak, and I say that in the most loving way, none of them are assholes. (I of course am always able to be proven wrong, but I have not met them yet)

Elsewhere in AK we have 'tech' threads about interconnects and power cords and sound liberating incense that generally end up getting halted, sometimes with the comment 'you guys know better'. It becomes clear that threads on items with no scientific or factual standing devolve quickly. or another way: objective threads survive (except CV19), subjective threads tend to self destruct.

So this running off with mean comments and the like, is it in like say the marantz forum where someone is told they dont know their ass from a differential input, or is it in an area where the bounds of reality are looser? that would explain a lot. AK is for everything audio, from the people redesigning amps, down to threads claiming oasis is the new beatles and again I think it boils down to subjects that have objective answers (meaning it is, or is not) vs subjective (fav color type crap) and in the latter, there is greater chance of facebook mentalities coming out.

There are a couple of small classes of new members who deserve to get run off. The first class are those who ask for valuation in first post. Clearly, it is hit and run and they are not staying once they get what they want. They are also hoping to get an offer via PM. The second group are those who join to do some guerilla (or is it gorilla?) marketing. They post in General instead of Cutting Edge. They are a little harder to spot because they attempt to masquerade themselves as true enthusiasts. Usually, the promoted item is a fringe product with marginal to no benefit whatsoever. Neither of these scenarios happen very often but when they do, they get called out.

Unfortunately the written word doesn't always come across as the spoken which is what I suspect is the reason problems like this occur.

Sometimes new members don't appreciate the complexity and in some cases, the controversial nature of what they're asking, innocently unaware of the minefield they wandered into. Fortunately it doesn't happen too often.
