SA 8800 and a 9800?

As many others here, I've recently gotten into the vintage silver Pioneer gear. I remember being about 10 years old in the late 70's and being amazed at the silver and flashing lights. In the past 6 months I've gotten 4 HPM-100s, a TX 9500, a SA 8800, and a SA 9800.

My question is how will this sound? Using each amp to power a pair of speakers stacked (top set flipped). The 9800 would be pre and power and the 8800 would only be power. Would the power difference be an issue?

Welcome aboard! The power inbalance shouldn't make that much of a difference. You are only talking about 20 watts per channel. I've never been a stacking type guy, although the idea has crossed my mind. As far as using the sa8800 as a pure amp, I don't see why that would'nt be fine. What speakers are you using? What type of music do you listen to? I'm going to take a guess that you listen to rock.

and welcome to the Pioneer gang!
There is nothing wrong with your setup. I also have never tried the stacked speaker thing, but some here do it with one amp. If you get the volumes propper aligned this should work.
Or you can make a sourround setup out of it with 2 ampsand 4 speakers!

Hi

I have an SA 9800 and it sounds great!! I also have a SPEC 1 pre-amp!! I have played a CD through the SA 9800 using it on its own and then I have played the same CD through the SA-9800 with the SPEC-1 acting as the pre-amp rather than the SA-9800`s built-in pre-amp and quite frankly, I cant hear any noticable difference!!!! I love em both so wont sell em - just waiting to find a SPEC-2 or SPEC-4 Power amp to partner with the SPEC-1 and a set of HPM 100`s (the JBL designed type) and have another beautiful vintage system to listen to!!! :thmbsp:

However you decide to proceed, it will sound good regardless!!!! :yes:

Like the picture and the statement in my little avtar says, "..............its up to you" The choice is yours - its not always about doing things right, its about doing the right thing!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the replies. As far as my music tastes....very diverse. Motorhead to Oingo Boingo, Beethoven to Snoop Dogg, and George and Tammy to Boozoo Chavez. I just can't wait to get everything done and set up. Right now I'm done cleaning all the innards and refinishing all the wood (amps and speakers). Next I'm having the amps checked out and tuned.
