SA-9500 ii and PL-530

So, as the title says, I have a SA-9500 ii and a PL-530. The 9500 is driving a pair of older NHT Threes.

I have three questions about my setup:

1. I have heard of people recapping the 9500, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on this. It's in complete working order with no issues whatsoever, so I was wondering if I should just wait until something happens and then replace them or if there is a noticeable upgrade in quality with different caps.

2. Does anyone have any recommendations on a stylus for my PL-530? I listen to mainly 60's-90's rock. I've heard that the 530 is quite particular on cartridges.

Cannot comment on the turntable, but the amp I can. I have one that I have totally recapped with the exception of the main filter caps and, at least with mine, it made a huge difference. The first thing that was immediately noticeable after the recap was the bass response, it improved in triplicate. The mids and highs were noticeable smoother and more detailed as well, and as the caps burned in, it just kept improving. I now use it as my main amp and I have only come across one other integrated that can almost compare with it in sound quality, and that is a recapped Kenwood KA-8006.

To directly answer your question, it is up to you. Recapping it does bring a noticeable upgrade in quality and it does take a lot of labor and patience to do, but the results are worth it, and it will last for another 20-30 years if you do.

This was a new list made by me, I used it to recap my 9500II. The only difference between when I used it and now is I changed the 4.7uF UKL's to 50v caps, as they are back in stock, when I did mine they only had the 63v in stock.

OP: Clean and do the adjustments per the factory Service Manual. As for the Cartridge, the model # of the Audio Technica should be on the top of the cartridge. Undo the screws enough to remove it from the headshell, write down the model #.

Vinylengine.com should have the manual. You haveto register but it's free to register.

You'd probably get better answer for it in the Turntable Forum. Me I'm particular to Shure's and Stanton/Pickerings. 681EE stanton or a MX97E Shure would work well. I don't use AT's although they are usually good cart's / styli. Your choice. You could also just get a new stylus for the existing cartridge.

I think that is a lowly cartridge and most anything would be an upgrade.

The AT95 is cheap at $50 and well thought of.

So after taking the amp apart, I noticed on the Switch Assembly, it appears that Q10 and Q8 have been replaced.
They appear to have been replaced with what *appears* to be part # 512-KSC2383YTA and 512-KSC2073TU, respectively.

Q9 appears to have been re-soldered, or replaced with a B595-O.

Does that seem right?
Or should I replace them with something else?
 
i Picked up a 9500 II a few months back ...used it only a short while and one channel bit the dust .... Any takers on the repair and maybe a recap?
 
The Q8 and 10 transistor replacements are perfectly acceptable, in fact they are exactly what I or Mark would use as a sub. The Q9 replacement is also acceptable in specs, can you tell me what brand it is?

I believe the Q9 is a Toshiba based on the "T" on it.

After looking at the board, this part looks like it's heat damaged, mainly around what I believe is R52 on AWS-109.

This lonely transistor, Q13, looks kinda beat up. Does it appear to be damaged from this photo?

And I read that some people have replaced this relay. Is that something that commonly goes out? Should I just preemptively replace it?

You are correct on all accounts, Q8, 9 and 10 look fine, I don't see any problems there. That area of the board around R52 gets hot, so it will be a little browned, but I do not see any true heat damage. My board looks exactly the same way.

As for Q13, that is not damage, it is just the way it ages, mine looks the exact same way. If you want to replace it, the KSC2073 will work just fine. The relay, unless it is not working properly, it doesn't need replaced, all it would need is the contacts cleaned. As far as I'm aware, the relays used in this model don't have any problems.

Wow - thanks for the updated BOM! I've been planning to recap one I bought a few years ago, but haven't checked it out, so it's never been turned on.

Where do you get the service manual?
