Everything above was replaced except Q1, Q2 2sc869 over current transistors on the Switch Assembly AWS-109. I powered up the DBT. It was bright then dimmed down quickly and I was able to set VR1's to spec (30mV), but during this time it would go in and out of protection. Turn VR1's all the way down again and power off. I then replace the 2sc869's (Q1,Q2) and power up again on DBT. Once again I am able to set VR1's to spec but it never came out of protection.

Any Clues?

once it is safe to set each idle current (test setting went ok) turn idle to zero, and then power up without the dim bulb.

The dim bulb acts like a brownout, and the brownout gets worse the more current the unit draws - like when you increase idle current. The brownout may be severe enough that the turn-on threshold for the protection unit is never reached - as far as the protection is concerned, the unit hasn't powered up enough yet.

There are times where the protection trips OUT when the idle current is turned up, because the increased idle current causes the AC voltage to drop enough to make the protection think the unit has been turned off.

You CAN try a larger wattage bulb, or two bulbs in parallel if you don't have a bulb that's 100 or 150 watts.

Ah! thank you. I was using a 100w bulb. I'll grab a 120 and 150 at the store and try again using the 120 first. But you are saying it should be OK to plug directly into the wall at this point since I was able to set idle current?

no dim bulb this time. idle current is set but it still won't come out of protection. :scratch2:
edit: after an hour it came out of protection. i rechecked voltages and it would rapidly cycle in and out. i'll probably take it to mufich audio and see if he can troubleshoot it.

Could I get a confirmation that those transistor replacements look correct? I can get sound but it is "tinny" at times if that makes sense. I engaged the tone control and got a loud thump as well. hmm..

sunday is company day, I have guests over. I will not be on till late tonight. I took a bit of time to do the 1050 list and it got unexpectedly complicated.

yours has also gotten unexpectedly complicated.

check your dc voltages BEFORE the relay.

thumps = dc in the preamp etc, look for a reversed capacitor or a solder short, since it WAS working ok.

So... I was checking my work this afternoon. Nothing wrong with EQ board. Nothing wrong with Switch board. I remembered a lifted pad on a capacitor on the Tone board. I had previously "repaired" it with super glue. Pushing down on the capacitor revealed it was lifted again.

I used hook-up wire and connected it with it's neighbor, the resistor. Fired it up on DBT. All good there. Plug it into the wall and recheck idle current. Still going in and out of protection. Hook up some speakers and it still sounds funny then all of a sudden BAM! TUNES!

I don't know how it happened but it did. Played great for about 45 minutes when the right channel went out. GRRRR! There was static then the music went out and now only static. With the tone control engaged the right channel sounds awful.

UPDATE: just tried it again and both channels are back

Right Power Amp Pin readings

2) 53.6 V
5) 53.6 V
8) -53.6 V
11) -53.6 V
13) -53.3 V
14) 53.3 V
19) 48.2 V
20) 48.2 V
21) -49.2 V

The rest are either 0 mV or unstable

Control Amp (Tone)

1) 48 V
8) -49 V

The rest are either 0 mV or unstable

From the description, the power amp is not involved - garbage in, garbage out.

Tone control. Something is intermittent. Post a picture of that lifted pad area.

Mark, thank you for your time.

During this whole process the only trouble I had was with the four 100uf 35v caps on the control board. The trouble being they were very heat stressed. I replaced the first three without incident and with the heat of my soldering iron turned down to a bare minimum for work. The fourth was the problem. Like I said earlier, one of its pads came halfway off. Super glue did not work obviously. Today I went ahead and replaced that cap. The pad was dead and completely off the circuit board. I used the lead from the cap as a jumper to a resistor with heat shrink tubing in the middle.

Progress was made. It hasn't been in and out of protection and I was only experiencing some static with an occasional pop from one channel. The tone control was working flawlessly. Then I noticed when I touched any of the controls on the tone board the static would increase. Low and behold the bolts were not tightened. So after tightening them up I had an hour long listening session with no incident. I'm not trying to jinx myself and I'm not going to call it "Mission Accomplished" just yet. I'm going to give it the rest of the night to see if anything comes up. If it does I will get you that picture and report the problem.

I forgot to mention how amazing it sounds :yippy:

To me, NOTHING beats a restored Pioneer :music:

Well, damn. I just heard a pop and now it wont come out of protection. Checked idle current again and it is fine, so the quest continues..

Before powering it up again check the rectifier diodes, D9-D12, chances are very high one or more might have gone bad.

If one (or more) is bad, use a 1n4004 for a replacement. If the diodes test fine, then check Q8 and Q9 for shorts.

Thanks Matt,
Radio Shack and Fry's Electronics didn't have the 800mA fuses so I have to make another Mouser order. I already have the 1N4004's on hand and will also order replacements for the other diodes just in case.

Just to clarify, testing diodes I need to lift one leg to get a proper reading and for transistors just use the diode function on my multimeter and it should range somewhere between 550-650 correct? All this with the unit powered off? I just want to get it right.

Replacement for Q8: 2SD526 is 512-KSC2073TU
Replacement for Q9: 2SB596 is 512-KSB596OTU or could I use 512-KSB596YTU (OTU is going obsolete and is $3.62 whereas the higher gain YTU is $0.73)

EDIT: I notice a slight volume decrease when I turn on the Tone switch. Is that because I used KSC1845ebu's on the EQ board and KSC1845fta's on the control board?

edit: re-volume change - NO... absolutely not. resistors and capacitors (tone level changes are gain changes) actually set the gain of the stage, and it is far less than the flat out maximum of the transistor. Good design makes things predictable, and transistor gain ain't...

you will not need the current rating of the b596, nothing regulated hits an amp and a half.

you could use the on-semi mje 15032/33's....

863-MJE15033G pnp to-220 bce 250v 8a 50w 30mhz 70hfe $1.30
863-MJE15032G npn to-220 bce 250v 8a 50w 30mhz 70hfe $1.30

(hah, and I recommend a really powerful transistor... irony but they have superior longevity under hot conditions)

I have said before that the d7000, 3900, 3800 and d5000 are all very similar and share transistor lists (that I generated a while back, and took a lot of thought and work to accomplish without people being bit by inopportune combinations, and while the lists don't leap out at you like some do, they are there to be found). why are all these oddball things that come back to bite you being continued?

(Yoda voice) "Been bitten a lot I have!" I found a few threads on the 9500ii but none contained the replacements for Q8 and Q9, so I did a search for original transistor replacements and found those. I now realize this is wrong and I will ask next time.

Sooo.. GAME PLAN: Order fuses & parts, test diodes D9-D12 and transistors Q8-Q9

I would be a lost little puppy without you two guys :D
