SA-9800 Frys Speakers!

It's been a LONG journey!!!

Mark, thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!!

A package of ALL leftover components are getting ready to be shipped to you, plus the CD.

I'll keep you posted on how things go with this beast.

Only bad thing is I only have one set of speakers and they are my beloved Kenwood 280W KL-888Z's that are currently hooked up to my sx-1050.

There's no rush on sending the parts back, in fact IF they stay there for a while they just might act as a deterrent to Murphy's Law....

Well....so far, so good.

I'm jamming to it now and have been for about 4 hours straight.........it's sounding GOOD!!
I checked the offsets right before I connected the speakers AND after it had been on for a while and they were only at around 03.5mV on both channels.

Going to re-check the offsets in a little bit.

Ok....it's been playing at normal volumes almost 5 hours....then the wife and kids stepped out and I've been listening to it LOUD for a LITTLE while (thinking this would put it to the TRUE test) THEN went and checked the offsets at the speaker terminals again and....

Left channel: 16.5mV

Right channel: 00.2mV (sometimes it would even drop down to zero)

I set the volume back at zero and all the other switches/controls down (or off) as well before checking the offsets .

Is 16.5mV acceptable?

Right now, I wouldn't worry about it, but every once in a while after things are heated up I would check it, and if it doesn't go any further off, it's not worth chasing... especially remotely.

There are a LOT of transistors that could be drifting with heat.

Swapping out even one amplifier transistor isn't worth the work or risk at this point.

You did one hell of a good job, brother!!:thmbsp:

I polished the faceplate and used lemon oil on the cabinet and now it looks as good as it sounds!:music:

Once again....thanks man!:thmbsp:

Well, you honestly owe it to markthefixer to obtain a.s.a.p. a new set of vintage speakers to run with this restored baby. Out you go! Get shopping!!! Don't let mark's work sit idle and go to waste ..... :D

Congratulations! You both have done very well and at a distance. I have thoroughly enjoyed following this effort. My hats off to both of you. :music:

Thanks guys!!:thmbsp:

I'll will eventually get another set of speakers as soon as I can get some spare $$. Either way, this amp won't sit idle. Too much work went into it to let that happen.....besides, I wouldn't do that to Mark.:D

Great work guys! You should both feel very good about this project. Now Mark, I'm having a problem with a...

Congratulations, I admire your determination and stick to it attitude. I too have been following this thread, and my hats off to Markthefixer and ech68. Well done CC

Thanks again guys!!:thmbsp:

It's nice to finally be able to enjoy what turned out to be such an ongoing project.

Mark is just a great guy!! His help is VERY much appreciated!!

I've been listening to it every day since Tuesday and it's still doing great....I'm going to check the offsets and see if they stayed the same.

Edit:
It has pretty much stayed the same as far as offsets goes, I just checked it again and it's at......

Left: 16.0mV
Right: 00.3mV

I'm thinking about taking it apart one last time and re-checking the voltages from VR1, VR3, and VR5 (on the left channel board) after it's been on for several hours and see if I can get the offset at least a little lower.

Here are a couple of pics (which were taken from a cheap camera so please excuse the poor quality)......this thing IS in near mint condition cosmetically though.

Check the DC offset occasionally, plus after a long listening session. Basically it has to earn back trust...

Ok...well it's earned back my trust. I left it on for about 5 hours, then I re-adjusted the offsets, DC current and Idle current. Now after 3 days of playing music through it all day long it's reading......

Right channel: -03.0mV
Left channel: 03.0mV

This SHOULD be my last post on this thread......

Ok...well maybe THIS will be the last one....:D

Mark, just wanted to let you know I should be able to have your package (unused/used parts and disk) ready and mailed out by Thursday.
