@ BlueKatt... You sir, are a great volume pot tech! Those photos are great and your intricate work on this particular piece is certainly not for the faint of heart. Great thread for others that dare to venture into the internals of this volume control. Nice job indeed.

Thank you! I appreciate the kudos.
Since I have been unable to find a replacement pot my only choice was to fix the existing part or find a similar pot and attempt a retrofit. Fortunately I was able to fix the original. So far its working perfectly.
Now if I can just find a metal top cover for the SA-9800 I will be happy!

That shouldn't be too difficult. Just get one that is straight and you can sand and paint it to look like new. I did that with my 9800, and it looks stellar.

How about one of those orange handled sharp pointy pry tool things? If you don't want to pay Snap-On prices, most dollar stores or even Harbor Freight have the same thing for less.

No luck finding a metal cover so far. Most of these units came with the wooden case but I want to convert mine to make it rack mountable. If I cant find a cover to buy then I'm hoping a fellow AK'er can give me some dimensions of their cover so I can fab my own.

I was able to slip a utility knife blade under the push-nut and slowly work it off of the shaft. I had to sacrifice the rubber washer that was under the push-nut but that was easy to replace. The push-nut was not damaged during the removal process so and I was able to reuse it. Working great so far!

Oh. Sorry. I misunderstood. You want the full metal case. I thought you referred to the metal vent grill portion. THAT is a different story. You may find some difficulty locating one of those for sure. Good luck however.
Hi I am resurrecting this thread in the hopes that BlueCatt would be kind enough to answer a couple of questions.
"There was not enough material on the shaft to stake on the detent plate so I installed a brass collar over the shaft and held it in place with a set screw. The collar is a part I normally use for RC airplanes. It's a perfect fit.”
A) Do you remember what the size is that brass collar?
B) Did the brass collar come pre-fitted with the set screw or did you have to drill & tap the collar for the set screw?
C) What did you use for shaft Lube?
D)WHat size replacement did you use for the rubber washer

Unfortunately I did not measure the size of the collar that I used. I just looked into my box of RC stuff and found one that fit. The collars are used on RC airplanes and helicopters. They are already drilled and tapped and inclued a set screw and wrench. If you follow the link below you will see a variety of some of the different sizes that are available;

As for the rubber washer, I just took a sheet of rubber and used an exacto knife to cut a washer the same diameter as the push nut.
The lube I used was standard white lithium grease.

They come with set screw. I too would like to know the dimensions (I.D. , O.D. , thickness etc) and part number.

No egg on your face thanks for responding. When I take the volume control apart I will measure the Shaft for length it is pretty easy to see the part of the shaft that needs the collar.
