SACD player and CD-R

I have had my Sony SACD player DVP-S9000ES. For the price, it sounds pretty darn good.

One feature that I don't like about this sacd player or all in general, is that you can't play CD-R. I have some PC burned collection of music (about 20 discs) and bummed that it can't read at all.

Are there other SACD players that play SACD and CD-R?

My Sony SBX-770 SACD plays CDR´s like a champ.

I believe yours is primarily a DVD player which might explain its reluctance in playing them.
 
I think mine is a middle grade player. It seems like if I move up to SCD-777 level or go down to the NS models, it will play sacd. I do have a DVP-NS500V but I don't like the sound quality.

I guess my question is what SACD players play CD-R in the $500-$750 range current price? Not MSRP when new price but today's price like in Ebay.

I just tried my PS-3 80G (that plays SACD) and it plays CD-R's too - I think not playing them may be the rare exception.

It might be easier to look for a player you feel you'll like assuming they all play CD-R, then research that player to see if any CD-R issues have been reported. Actually, I was surprised to read your 9000ES didn't play them, I haven't heard of any other SACD players that have trouble with them but then my experience with CD-R is pretty limited.
 
Many older DVD players use a single red laser to play both DVDs and CDs. They can get away with playing pressed CDs with a red laser (instead of IR), but it doesn't work for CD-Rs. Most players made within the last 5 years have dual lasers, and won't have a problem with CD-Rs.
 
I read somewhere that the DVP-S9000 ES was introduced at the height of the copy-protection frenzy, and was specifically designed so that it would NOT play CDRs. In other words, it was an intentional part of the design, not some deficiency in ability due to substandard laser or parts. This is a very high quality player, but the inability to play CDRs is a drawback.
 
I knew it was intentionally done and I can understand it.

So are there other used SACD players in the $500-$750 range that plays CD-R? I mean today's price and not MSRP when new.
 
wsjoe, if I had your budget, I'd be looking hard at a used Marantz SA-8001. There are some on audiogon right now...

Just curious. Have you tried various brands of CD-R? Depending on the player, some are able to be read better than others.

OK just read the manual. DVP-9000ES player cannot play CD-Rs. Sorry.

My Marantz SA11S2 SACD player has no problem recognizing and playing CD-Rs, even older ones I burned that have paper labels on the entire non-data side, before I moved to inkjet printable CD-Rs. Have you tried a different brand of CD-R ? I have Sony and Pioneer DVD players that will play Memorex inkjet printable DVD-Rs yet refuse to even recognize Memorex non-printable DVD-Rs. You may have a similar situation with your SACD player where its just fussy about brand or type of disc.
 
Just the old DVP???? SACD/DVD players don't play CD-Rs. Any of the SCD???? will play them without issues.
