Sad NAD 3140 attempt at restore.

Hi forum. I found this butchered 3140 for a few bucks. Missing a tranny, cut wires, speakers arent hooked up to terminals, but it looks original otherwise. Original outputs and caps an’all. I think someone was using it as a preamp only…..see pictures of the funky/missing wiring.

Aren’t there supposed to be 2 transformers like 2140?

Oh wow! What a hack job!

I've never heard of a NAD transformer going bad in all my years of working with them. Noisy, yes, and those were cured by giving them a varnish bath.

The way I see it, you have two options :

1) save a search on eBay, and wait for a replacement transformer to come up.

2) do the same as above, but for a parts unit 3140 or 2140.

If the transformers were for each channel, then you could rewire it to just run off one. But the way NAD did it, was to give a higher voltage, they wired the transformer secondaries in series, so you can't just use one.

I've had a transformer failure in 3140, but that unit had quite nasty liquid/moisture corrosion on that side. Replaced both with a pair from a parts unit during restoration.

I would like to save the unit, but I need trannies. Ideas welcome. I have searched quite a bit…..all the usual places. Nothing.

Sometimes it's a long wait for a parts unit to turn up. I waited three years for a Mission 700 woofer.
