Sad New from Radio Shack

I started this thread and believe it or not I actually went to Radio Shack the other day. When messing with a non-working circuit I accidently shorted the + rail to ground and blew a small fuse.

Radio Shack had and is only 2 miles from my house! I'm going to miss them.

As for Worst Buy and Circus City, I believe the engine driving both these days is those $2000 plus wide screen TV's. They'll do anything to get you in the store. Worst Buy now is teaming up with McDonalds on $1 and $5 give-a-ways.

Regards,
Jerry

I went into one of our local RS store today looking to see if they had any speaker jumpers. I had called in advance and the person told me they had some and they were $5. So I hop in the car, drive out to the mall and someone immediately helped me. I told him what I was needing and that I had called first and was told they had them. He kept trying to sell me speaker binding posts. I told him that wasn't what I needed and explained it to him again. He told me I would have to talk to Clint. Then another guy came up to wait on me, I told him what I needed and what they were for, and he tried to sell me binding posts. Hmmm. He suggested I talk to Clint. So I found Clint, who was waiting on another customer and I could tell by his voice that he was the person I had spoken to on the phone. I waited about 5 minutes or so for him to finish helping the customer select a phone, as he was heading back to get it, I asked him if I could ask him a question. He told me no, to ask one of the others to help me, that he was busy. I told him that I had already spoken to them and they didn't know. He said, sorry, you have to wait until I go get a phone from the back and finish a sale. He was actually pretty rude about it. I walked out, came home and made a jumper out of speaker wire. No biggie, but it wasn't the service I was expecting. All told I was in the store for about 20 minutes and left unsatisfied. Will I go back? Only if I have to. I wasn't expecting him to totally stop doing what he was doing, just to point me to the item. I know, I know, I shouldn't let the small stuff bother me. But dammit, don't they know who I think I am? :smoke:

I've had a similair experience with RS. Although for the most part, they have had just about everything I've needed. I'll call them to see if they have a certain item (usually an audio adaptor of some sort), I naturally end up talking with the newest employee in the store, and almost always have to "work my way up the chain" to the guy who actually knows if they stock a particular item. Total time spent is usually better than 20 minutes to actually confirm that they do indeed have the item I want. I'll avoid going in RS unless I really need something. Due to where I live, RS is pretty much the only place that offers such items for audio purposes. They used to be excellent, and used to have anything you could imagine. That is, untill Best Buy and Circuit City came on the scene. I'd rather go to RS then Circuit City for obvious reasons.

All that having been said, RS still has some speciality items that BB or CC doesn't carry. Just wish they were as good as they used to be.

I went in to the one across the street from my house yesterday. They had a couple of cool looking radio control helicopters. :D

I'm with you blacknight, Gateway Electronics is a good place, ... blacknight there is another place called Electronics Exchange that has a whole lot of surplus electronics, old stereos and lab equipment. J.
Web site?

Radio Shack used to be cool. You could go in there and actually find someone that knew something about electronics. Now if you don't know where in the store the item you are looking for is located, it may take forever to get it. Customer service/common courtesy seems to be a thing of the past for the most part not just there but in general. :scratch2: Let's not talk about laying off 13k employees via e-mail while at the same time sponsoring the Rolling Stones tour. I am sure that did little for overall company morale. :smoke:

One of the really sad things about RS, and many companies in general, is that they probably spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on "market research" to find out whats wrong. I doubt that any of them think to put their company name into a Google search and find forums like this . . . where we enumerate their shortcomings fairly clearly. And its direct from the customers mouths . . . er, fingers. ;)
