SAE 2600 & SAE P101 thoughts...

Just had a buddy snag a SAE 2600 and an SAE P101 for me, they were out of town a bit (4 hours away), was wondering what the consensus is on these units?

I know, I know, everyone has different tastes, and it's hard for everyone to agree, but if you've listened or own/ed I would be interested in your opinions.

Looking forward to him dropping them off in the next few weeks, then it will be a matter of convincing bktheking to work his magic...... :banana:

You may have noticed my recent thread where I spent a considerable amount of time rebuilding an A501. I'm listening to it now and am pleased as punch, both with the sound and the looks. The 2600 is even older though, and you may have to decide for yourself how accepting you are of taking care of an older amp like that. I love SAE because they have that 'serious business' look to them and were made to be workhorse power amps instead of boutique parts collections. If I was going to put a 2600 into daily service I'd want to go over it and refresh it. It sounds like you may already have someone lined up to do that.
 
I had not seen your thread, but did read through it this morning, it was a good read. Nice work & congrats on getting a sweet amp back up and running! :)

I definitely will have this amp looked at. I am to busy with the kids (2.5 & 1year old boys) & work to give it a shot, but I know a great tech and fellow aker (bktheking) that I am sure would be able to work his magic. I actually just got an SAE MK XXIII back from him, the VU meter had broke and he, amazingly, repaired it by having me grab one that was similar to it from the big auction site and swapping the innards out.

Looks and sounds great now. :)
 
The SAE 2600 amps are very difficult to work on and many tech's won't do them. Hopefully your tech is competent ans well as comfortable working on them.

I got a SAE 2600 a couple years back that needed a complete rebuild. I replaced every transistor and capacitor as well as other bits and I'm very pleased with it's performance.

Good luck with yours. Once completely gone through I'm sure it will perform great for many more years.

Thanks Rob41, I had seen your thread and was hoping you would chime in :)

Your rebuild thread would/is be a valuable resource for anyone looking to have one of these beasts rebuilt. I know it is over my head, but the ak member bktheking I am sure should be able to fix this baby up. I am sure he will be hitting that link a few times to take a look at what you did.

So I have to ask you, after all the work you did on this amp, how do you the sonic's stack up against other gear you own or have owned? It is hard to find any reviews on it, but I did see that it was not cheap when it came out, especially considering some of the other gear that could be purchased for less.

What's difficult about them? I see an amp like the B1 as a difficult amp to work on, what's special about this model? I know SAE service manuals are hard to come by, that sometimes leads to complications not knowing the circuit. Just went through your thread, well done on your unit and thanks for posting the SM info. IIRC the unit tierbo has is working, just needs a refresh. The boards are pluggable in this sae, that makes a world of difference. I'm pretty confident I can work on this unit.

I've never had a B1 in my hands, but I'd agree, the insides of that make the SAE's look simple in comparison haha.
