SAE Mark 1B Preamp troubleshoot

Hi everyone. I have this SAE Mark 1B Preamp that I am trying to use with my Braun LV 1020 speakers that have amps in each speaker. I tried connecting cd player to input connectors (aux 1 or aux 2) on SAE and connecting Braun amps to output Main1 plugs. Also I tried speakers output with no luck. No sound. Tried headphones, nothing. Front panel light is on btw.

I have the same pre-amp and had the same no sound your experiencing. Clean all your controls with dexoit all push buttons in the front and back but not the sliders on the equalizer leave them alone.I did this and mine came back to life and I haven't had a problem since.

It took me almost a day and at one point I almost gave up on it but it came back to life.The SAE 1B retailed for more than the Mcintosh C-28 I think it was like 825.00 the 1b never really turns completely off there is always electricity flowing through the capacitors.Once you get it running you will be impressed with the sound it can reproduce and SAE was ahead of its time the case is all aluminum which no one was doing that back then. Yeh, I've been doing it for couple of hours now, non stop. Nothing.
 
I guess I was lucky but there are a lot of knobs and switches that can cause you trouble I had problems even with the balance knob and maybe you have a different problem than I had. The preamp is a definitely keeper and worth the effort.
 
Am I correct by saying that a preamp must emit sound whether it's on or off. It lets the signal come through even if it's off?

I don't quite understand your question but the preamp must be on to have a signal go to your speakers which you can hear. Now if your controls and switches need cleaning you can have signal but the controls and switches will not let the signal pass to your speakers which in your case no sound.Signal as in Phono,Cd Tuner, Aux..

What power amp are you using if you don't have a power amp you will get no sound and you never answered my question are you using a power amp. thanks

I never had self powered speakers but I might be totally wrong but I think you need a power amp to make the SAE work what were you using before the SAE? Better yet I don't want to give you the wrong advise and maybe someone has more knowledge than me about powered speakers. good luck you have a really nice preamp.

I just restored Braun LV1020. They work well when I connect CD player directly to them. But these speakers would be much better off with a preamp. So I figured SAE Mark 1B would be a good preamp in this case.

Do you have the manual by any chance?
 
IIRC headphone jacks won't work without an amplifier hooked into the preamp. But it should still drive powered speakers. Check to make sure no shorting jacks are in any outputs. Other than cleaning, nothing at the top of my head. Normal trouble shooting is to start with the power supply voltages. Good luck
