Recently purchased an SAE 8000 tuner. In very good condition and working great. It just needed a good cleaning (done), upper right corner faceplate slightly bent (already straighten out) and Center Tune & Signal Strength meter bulbs burnt out (replaced).
Now for the main thing that these tuners are known for. Only one out of the four digital displays is not working properly. Only the top segment of the LED is out on this one. The rest of the other LED's are working good. I would like to replace all four of these. The original LED's are DL-747 that SAE first used which are nolonger available. This particular SAE 8000 tuner already has the correct resistors that SAE had first put out on a Service Bulletin to prevent the LED's from going out. What I am dealing here with is just one bad LED but if I am going to replace one I might as well replace all four of them to keep the same consistancy on the color brightness. On two other threads a replacement is mentioned to use LTS-1304LC LED from Jameco. Contacted them but, they nolonger carry it nor a replacement for it.
Anyone know of a proper LED replacement, size, color, etc. for the SAE 8000 tuner display?

Some time ago I replaced the 7 segment displays with HDSP-3400 (Hewlett Packard).
I guess they are still available. The height of the number is 20mm vs 16mm of the original DL747 but it fits in without any problem. The colour of the body is not black. Therefore I painted it with a felt pen.

If you search Ebay on SAE 8000 you will find a seller with DL-747 displays. He sells them in sets of 4. He's somewhat expensive at about $68 per set, but I haven't seen anyone else that has them.
If you should decide to buy his displays, I would be interested in buying yours if you would want to sell them. I have a Collins 651S-1 receiver, which uses the same display, and one of the displays has a bad segment.

LED Segments

Yea, I've already seen those on Ebay.

I'm interested in those since I am dealing with just one LED top segment that is out, but also interested in having my SAE possibly restored since there is another problem with the actual display starting to dift after about 10mins. of warm up. I figured that the cap's would need to be replaced and since that would be done I would also have all four of the LED digits replaced as well.

I just need to find someone or place that is trust worthy and knows what they are doing to send it to to have this done.

Has anyone replaced the cap's and LED digits on an SAE 8000 before?

If so exactly which one's need replacing and where did you find the capcitor replacements at?

I have the schematics to this tuner but would like some guidance and direction as far as exacly what caps to replace to correct the problem?
As for the LED digits, well I know how to replace those.

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Exchange the faulty display with #1 (hundreds)
Works like a charm.
 
SAE 8000 Tuner LED display replacements!

Well it appears as though the long search for suitable or identical LED replacements for the famous SAE 8000 Tuner display has just maybe come to a solution?
Came across this website and low and behold lookey what I found.

Here is what the new version looks like but check out the website and see for yourself. Also they list the original specifications to the original DL747 LED for comparison.

Thanks, everyone for all this research. I will go with the Litronix ES6459, but the $1.50/ea price is made less awesome by the $25 minimum. I'm going to check in with my local chip shop to see if they can add this to an order they might already need.
Still, I now have an option for my 8k, and I am delighted to think it may be restored.
If anyone has used teh ES6459, please comment with how it worked, any things you wished you had known, and any tips. I see teh data sheet mentions that soldering heat is the leading cause of fatigue and early failure, so I will be extra careful.
