I lost my Cat "Miss Twinkles" this past Thursday. Took her to Anti-Cruelty to be euthanized. She died 1:56pm.
She was a New Mexico Kitty, I had fed and cared for her there for a good 4-1/2 years as a semi-feral Cat, somebody evidently once owned her, because she was spayed. But had her claws, a horrible thing to do I think is declawing a cat.
August 31, 2017 I brought her with me across country back to the Midwest, and as well my Female Dobie Mix "Bucky". Bucky died in 2018 in Wisconsin, from a convulsive attack. I only had her 2 years, I rescued her from Animal Control.
Last October, I'm sitting on my bed, she was curled up next to me, and felt the bed jerking, I thought she was yakking a Hairball. No, she was violently sneezing blood, and left a large puddle on a brand new, 2 day old Comforter. Sure, I was very scared, and I had prayed it was just a fluke occurrence for whatever odd reason.
It wasn't. A couple weeks passed, and the sneezing blood re-occurred. Then it became intermittent, sometimes not sneezing blood for a couple weeks or so, one time she even went a whole month. But then it became more regular.
It was a week after the first occurrence where I did bring her to a Vet. After $541, no determination was made as to the cause. She had Gingivitis, and was also found to have a Heart Murmur, on a 1-6 scale, they said she was a "4". Blood work was good supposedly. Note how I say "supposedly". No infection present?
There were periods where it then was occurring every day, and multiple times a day. Starting out of the sky blue, and any time of day-night. As quickly as it came, a couple minutes later and tending to her, wiping her nose-face, the bleeding would stop.
It became a chore cleaning up, because I was finding wherever she may go in the house, I was finding evidence of blood on Carpets, on the Walls, Food Bowl, etc.
Again back to another Vet, the first I didn't like, nor trust. and again another whopping bill, this time over $700. Prescribed Anti-Biotics because they found she did have a high white blood cell count.
The A-B Meds proved to not have much effect, if any.
And again, another month later, to a dental specialist, thinking that this issue was caused by a dental abcess.
Nothing was found, but due to her age, and the heart murmur, they were reluctant to sedate her. They on 2 occasions were able to take X-Rays. They claimed nothing unusual was found.
Then, within the past few months developed a swelling under her right eye, and it was getting worse. And again another regimen of Anti-Biotics, this time Clavamox, and again no positive effect.
The one Vet said one last ditch attempt might be Prednisolone (Steroids)
But during her last 7-10 days on earth, she apparently became unable to breathe through her nose, making grating-snoring sounds, horrible. And the last 6 days of her life then was not eating.
I fought so hard, I resisted, I surely did not wish to ever let her go, but there was no choice, I had to do what was required, and end her misery and suffering. Within this 10 month period she became weaker and weaker, frail, lost weight.
The last vet 6-7 weeks ago proposed imaging, and if needed-required, dental surgery. The cost? $2961-$4300.
I never really knew how old she was, she was an adult cat when we both found each other. She could've been 12-13, she could've been 17-18?
She was such a dainty girl, well behaved cat, never destructive, loved me so much, and was no problem then adapting to a house cat.
I cried countless tears over the 10 month span, and will cry countless more. These last few days I am devastated, and heartbroken over losing her.
There are only a couple consolations, and the major one is that she is no longer suffering. My suffering will continue for a long time. She was the apple of my eye, and she was my guardian angel who always watched over me, always waited for me by the door to return home, always kept tabs on me whenever in the house, and where was I? Many habits will be hard to break, and I now feel so empty, so all alone without her.
Here she is about 6 or so years back sitting on the porch steps in New Mexico.
