Anyone here fish for salmon? On TV I saw people fishing Michigan rivers in the winter but I don't recall if they mentioned the month. I was just wondering what the season is. I thought salmon layed eggs in the rivers during early fall (like now) and then returned to the lakes. Do they stay in the rivers over the winter?

If they were fishing in winter, most likely they were fishing for steelhead. The salmon spawning season is winding down in the rivers now and the steelhead, sometimes brown trout also, move in, feeding on the salmon eggs. They hang around for a month or so, then most move back to the big lake. They return in the spring to spawn and then return to the lake for the summer.
The older spawning salmon die, they don't go back to the lake. There may be a few smaller 'jack' salmon around that just followed the school but are too young to spawn.
