Hi all,

God how I LOVE Thrift Shops! Today, I scored a VERY clean & well cared for DUAL 704 DIRECT DRIVE TURNTABLE. Included with the DUAL was a nearly MINT (looking) pair of BOSTON ACOUSTIC A-40's Speakers. I was able to buy the aforementioned items for twenty six dollars! The A-40's of course will need to be RE-foamed but still, I believe will still be cost effective.
Tonight, I cleaned/detailed the DUAL and it looks just beautiful. I know nothing about the DUAL 704. While I realize that it is NOT a High End Turntable, I suspect the 704 is a model that is on the low end of High End.
I dunno, it appears to be a decent enough well made Table. I will test the 704 this weekend when I have more time to hook her up and play.
If anybody has any information about the 704, I would appreciate your thoughts/impressions/info.

I love the time after Christmas!! Great deal there Sixcats. I scored a set of nice KLH 20 plus speakers at GW, a Dual 1249 from CL and an NAD cassette deck sitting on top of the trash.

Feels good doesn't it! Way to go!
 
Zip on over to vinylengine.com and look up the manual for that Dual. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the quality once you get it up and running. Check S/N ratio (weighted) and if it's over about 65, you are into the Hi-Fi arena on at least the bottom floor :)

I guess I'm sort of lucky in this regard as I am able to check out nearly ALL the SA's/GW on a regular basis.

I just looked up the 704 & the 704S on the Dual Reference Web site and that looks to be a pretty good 'table. According to the Web site the 704 sold for $320 and the 704S went for $400. Here is the link to the Web site. http://www.dual-reference.com/

Those Boston Acoustics A40s are a nice little speaker too. A good turntable and speakers for $26? That sounds like a major score in my book! :yes: Way to go! :thmbsp:

Today was my day off, so I cruised the Thrifts, GW, and SA looking for some post-Christmas deals of my own. Unfortunately, it was a dry hole here, but I did find several nice LPs for $.75/ea. so no complaints. Besides, it keeps me off the streets. :D

Again, congratulations on the score! It's aways good to here about a fellow AK'r making out! :thmbsp:

Your Dual 704 is well loved on the Greman Dual Board and highly sought after. Now you have figure out if it is a first model or second. Many came with a Shure V15 that made it a very potent package. http://www.dual-board.de/

Man ooh man, I have been on a HOT streak this week. Anyway, today
I found a UNIVERSITY SOUND INC. MODEL A300/1 (made in Sylmar, CA)
300 Watt POWER AMP. WHOA! This unit appears looks to be a professional MUSICIAN type Amp. I suspect it is 150 Watts per channel but, I'm not sure, perhaps three hunderd a side ? This much I can tell you, damn, it is HEAVY! My God, it's got to weight at least fifty pounds! It has a fan on the back of the Amp and rack handles on the front. The Amp is in quite GOOD physical condition. I detailed the unit tonight and the inside was surprisingly clean.
Anyway, I do NOT know how to hook up a Amp of this type so, after cleaning, all I did was plug it in, turned it on (and jumped back lol).
Ah ha, it powered right up and the fan came on right away. At any rate, since I don't need a Amp of this type, I suppose I'll FLIP it to help fund my TUBE and/or Turntable projects. Oooh, btw, the HEATHKIT A-9C is now in the hands of my friend (and retired RCA tech) for a overhaul. I'll let you know how this goes. Oooh, btw, the A300/1 Amp, cost me less than a cheap lunch of Pad Thai. Now all I have to do is find info on this item. It NEVER ends lol.

Glad to hear the A-9C is on the bench, being refreshed! I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds! :D
 
Be careful with that University Amp SixCats!

I did a bit of searching on that amp and found that it has
70.7 volt taps (as well as four and eight ohm taps).

The 70.7 volt taps can destroy a speaker that's not set
up for it.

Hi all,

Scott, thank you my friend for the WARNING! Tis' the reason why I did NOT hook this BEAST to my system. That is to say, I did NOT know how to hook it up correctly sooooo, (after cleaning) all I did was turn on the Amp to see if it powered up. It does and...that's about it for me and the A300/1.
I plan to SELL this unit as is. Hi THUN, yep lol, I'm on a ROLL and I have to ride this Gravy Train for as long as I can ride! Oooh, I for sure will let you know about the Heathkit A-9C when it's finished. Oooh btw, did you happen to see the PRISTINE Heathkit A-9 "B" Amp for sale on Ebay...Whoa! Stunning! I suspect this is going to sell for some fairly serious bucks!
I only wish I had the money to bid on it myself lol. Like I NEED another Amp.
Oooh, the STREAK continues, today I found a pair of "R-Hifi" Speakers for less than the cost of a large cup of Coffee! I already own a pair of these old Speakers (made by Radio Shack) and they sound wonderful for their size. Each Cabinet has a single (approx. 3" driver) which I believe is made by Fostex. The "R-Hifi's" sound excellent using tubes. Of course the Bass is not too pronounced but, the overall sound is VERY pleasing. Now I know why single drivers Speakers have such a following. Heck, I just couldn't pass these old Speakers up for LESS than two dollars the pair now could I ?
OK, ok, I'm "out of control".

Wow! Congratulations again! You are definitely on a roll, :thmbsp: so just go with the energy! I haven't had much luck at the thrifts with equipment, but I have picked-up some really great LPs. I found some classical LPs at the GW before Christmas that were pristine. A previous owner had even critiqued them and had a sticky note on each record label rating the sound, performance, and vinyl quality. The guy really knew what he was doing too, because IMHO his ratings were right-on. They must have come from a used record store or something. Of course they were quite a bit more money than normal. I paid $1/ea. instead of the usual $.50-.75/ea. :D Lots of really great music for almost nothing!

No, I'm afraid I missed that Heathkit A-9B on eBay. Probably just as well though because I'm up to my ears in projects right now and no time to do any of them. I've been working alot of extra hours trying to get some things finished at work so I could go on vacation. But now, as of Friday evening, I'm on vacation. So, I'll be heading south Monday for some R&R and will then spend some time at home.

I did happen to see an absolutely cherry Pioneer 7100 silver-faced integrated amp on eBay when I was surfing on my lunch hour that I was very temped to bid on, but the one common sense neuron that I have left fired and I let it go. :tears: It sold for somewhere around $115, so somebody got a really good deal on that one because it was cherry. :yes:

I really like the early Pioneer gear and still have a SX-626 receiver, a QL-600A four channel unit, and four Pioneer CS-R500 speakers that I bought new over several years in the early '70s. Those CS-R500s are the typical '70s West Coast sound speakers, but they sure surprised me the other day. I had my Snell Cs down for refoaming, so I took the opportunity to substitute my McIntosh MC-30 tube amps and two of the CS-R500's in-place of my 7270 and Snells in my main system. Boy, did those sound good! Those Mc tubes and the 3-way Pioneers loved each other. I was real surprised at how good they sounded. Those vacuum tube watts sure seem to be bigger than the SS watts. I always felt that those three-way Pioneers were at the top end of what the 27w/ch. SX-626 and the 10w/ch. QL-600A were capable of driving, but those 30w/ch. tube amps really made them sing. They really sounded good! :thmbsp: Jazz, Blues, acoustic Folk, Rock & Roll, etc. all sounded good on that setup. Unfortunately symphonic Classical only sounded tolerable, but that's the typical West Coast sound.

Those Mc tubes and Pioneer speakers were sure a good match. Given the low powered SS receivers and integrated amplifiers that were on the market in the early '70s, I would think that alot of the mass market speakers from that time period are probably pretty efficient and might sound pretty good on tubes. :scratch2:

I'm going to keep checking the thrifts and GWs here, but I've really been bitten by the tube bug myself, so I'll probably be conserving my cash to finance somemore tubes. Good luck with those new purchases!
