Berkeley has better record stores but their are lots of good musical fun things to do in the bay area that I'm sure AKers would love.
In Santa Cruz I've had good luck at Logo's and Streetlight Records as Dave has mentioned. Logo's is also the best used book in California. Get a slice of Pizza and a T-shirt from "Pizza My Heart" for $10. The SC Shakespeare is a fun in the redwoods experience. There are a lot of nice summer concerts in SC too (even free ones on the boardwalk). The Catalysts on Pacific has lots of shows too.
In SF Stern grove has excellent concerts. The Dobbie Brothers, Randy Newman and Mary Chapin Carpenter are playing this summer. Well summers in SF are a oxymoron, just ask Mark Twain.
On a more musical tourist note, La Maison Bleue (The Blue House) is as a famous song about a house in SF by French singer songwriter Maxime le Forestier. Every Parisian seem to know and love this song. "It was a blue house, that stood against a hill..." The house on 3841 18th St in SF and is well worth checking out. I've gotten a number of rounds drinks and made many friendships in Paris because I've walked by and causally know this house.
