Sansui 2000 Receiver - Freebie dropped in my lap

So this happened today. Any insights or watch outs on this piece? I quickly read the CJ rehab piece here on the site. Parts of it are quite dirty, so I gave the pots some cleaning and will tackle more later. I have not hooked it up to an input or speakers yet. Nice gent who gave it to my bought it during his days in Viet Nam. I am seeking that missing knob, and posted WTB over in BarterTown.

Not really other than the 50 year old caps and possibly the 2sc458's. Do note that Conrad's piece is on the 2000X which is a somewhat different variation of the 2000. The 2000A is pretty much the same as the "X" as they can and at times share boards between them. I haven't looked too hard into doing the mods on the 2000 as mine is running just fine after a recap and 2sc458 replacements about 8 years ago.

If I remember correctly (not using the manual or my 2000 downstairs), probably 9-10 of them scattered from the EQ(phono) AMP board, preamp board and the Main amp board. IF you don't have a manual for it look here( www.hifiengine.com) in the Sansui section, click on Stereo receivers and then click on 2000. Mandatory free registration.

Transistors are used for a myriad of things. Not being technically astute in Solid state I'd take a wild guess and say gain. KSC1845 for all but the PHONO section, then the KSC1815. Low Noise.
 
larryderouin is correct in all particulars... the 2SC458s are used for gain with low-noise, but unfortunately that transistor type did not age well-- even within 5-10 years they needed replacement, apparently, according to folks who were service techs in the 70s and 80s, because they became noisy... ironic for a device initially chosen for low-noise qualities. I believe there were a couple in the STEREO indicator circuit as well, but as noise there isn't in the audio signal path the replacement there is perhaps not as crucial.

KSC1845s are a great replacement, and there are indeed about ten of them between those three circuit sections, and a couple more scattered about in the non-audio path as I imply above. I am not sure whether I should have used KSC1815 instead in some of those positions-- looks to me like the primary difference is in how much current is required for the application: 1845s are 120V, lower current and 1815s are 60V, higher current, and I will be the first to admit my understanding of how to analyze a circuit to determine what would work better there is pathetic at best.

You've come to the right place. The 2000 is a well-understood piece of equipment around these parts.

I used bc550c as replacements

Although in the end it was dirty vr's that were causing all of the issues.

My best advice is too give it a thorough clean up first,marking any positions on the vr's then build a dbt fire her up and set the bias to 25ma per channel.

You can cause problems if you dive straight in and start replacing componants on a whim.

These are very well built units
