Sansui 2000x distorted left channel

first i did the pre-out/power-in swap and it stayed on the left channel. that would rule out the pre as the problem. i then recapped the driver board and replaced the 2sc458's with 2sc2240's. still distorted. plugged in a pair of headphones and noticed it plays great on both channels... but not with speakers. this gets me thinking about the 2sc793 output transistors. any thoughts on this matter?

The headphones feed directly from the outputs on this model. If the headphones sound OK shouldn't the outputs be OK?

Maybe the speaker selector switch has to be cleaned.

really cleaned the switch this time and i'm still getting the distortion. you can kind of hear some distortion with the headphones but it is more pronounced with speakers. and it's not the speakers fault (tried two sets).

Have you tested the two fast acting fuses on the back of the receiver with a meter?

If the fuses are good, test from ground to the fuse holders (inside the receiver) to see if you have voltage. Both should be about the same.

Did you get the correct type ? Have you seen this:

Quick Acting Fuses
For protection of Transistors etc.
These Fuses are extremely quick and about
10 times faster than Standard Fast Blow Fuse.

Do not replace with Standard Fuse.
If so, you loose the protection function

thank you for your concern! i did get fast acting instead of standard

This was fantastic information! I too had a left channel with distortion on my newly acquired Sansui 2000A. After reading this post, I checked the left fuse and it was blown. Have ordered fast fuses at 2.5A 250V. Thanks again!

HI Rob,

I had the same issue as AKADRHOUSE. Replaced both fuses and BINGO the other channel came instantly back! Thank you!!

Instant fix!! Anyone who has this issue try the fuses first! They are the problem.

You’re welcome.

That’s what nice about these forums. Post a problem and a solution and it may help someone out years later.
