Sansui 210 Phono Distortion

Hello friends,
This is my first post. I have just purchased a mint looking Sansui 210 from ebay. I have just connected my Klipsch RB-51 II and Audiotechnica AT-LP120 turntable to it. I have a problem:
The sound coming from Phono is extremely distorted! even when the record is not playing there is distorted bass sounds and listening to a record is absolutely impossible since it is just noise and distortion.
However, AUX and FM work fine and it sounds very clean.
What is the problem here? I very much appreciate your help.

Turntable got internal preamp switched on?

Just looked at the manual, try putting the switch at the back to Line and then plug the turntable to the AUX or Tape input, therefore bypassing the phono stage on the Sansui. The type of cable used and the connection to the phono stage has to be extremely good any weakness in that connection will result in very loud hum.

If you still have the distortion / Hum breaking yhrough via the Line/Aux stage on Sansui, then there may be a loose connection to the Cartridge head. Have you checked your connection to the cartridge as per manual and so on.

Alternatively, try the USB output to a computer, do you get the same distortion ?

Is the distortion in both channels, or just one?

The turntable is NOT sitting on top of the speakers or anywhere near them? - especially NOT in front of them, by any chance?
