Sansui 3300: Overwhelming Crackling/Popping

Hello all,

I have a Sansui 3300 that makes a horribly loud (bassy) crackling noise when in Phono 1 or 2. It sounds great for about 15-20 minutes of having it on then the random crackling and popping begins. It is about 90% out of the left speaker and the noise corresponds with adjusting the volume knob. However, it can sound like its about to damage the speaker even on low volume. The aux, fm and am radio inputs work perfect but both Phono 1 & 2 have the same issue. I found two other threads (links below) with somewhat similar issues but the popping was independent of the volume. Im clearly not an expert but I feel I could do some simple repairs but if it is out of my league I was hoping to find a professional operating in the Sacramento/Bay Area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the phono board for 2sc458 transistors. If it has them replace with KSC1845. I have a SX-626 (Pioneer) that was doing the exact same thing. A 2sa726 was causing the popping/crackling. These were supposedly low noise transistors back when they were built. But 40-45 years of use wore them out. Replace them on the phono board, and check the other boards for the 2sc458's also and replace.

Ok wow, you guys are great! Things got busy so I plan on working on the receiver this weekend. I'll plan on posting pictures of the inside for anyone interested.

Download the Datasheets when you order the transistors(Mouser) or just download if you have the transistors already. The pinouts on most of the new one's are different from the old ones and you have to get creative to match them up in order at times
 
Switched out the transistors and presto it is sounding great! Can't thank you guys enough for the expert advice! As promised heres a picture of the inside.

Well, this sucks.. After playing a few records Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with flawless sound I put on a new record today and bam the popping is back . It is strictly out of the right speaker and fluctuates a bit more than originally, but it is without a doubt the same crackling/popping noise. Also, it started up right away unlike originally when it took about 15 minutes to begin. Any ideas?
 
Is it still only on the phono board? Did you recap as well as replace transistors? At this point if it is only on phono I would look into a complete rebuild of that board. Also if you can find a schematic or SM (I couldn't with a quick check) check voltages around that board to make sure something isn't amiss and taking out your transistors

Also, just for giggles, did you deoxit the selector switch?
 
Ok so I'm back with good news. I did some tweaking and retraced my steps and I successfully repaired the receiver. Boiled down to a couple rookie mistakes. Thanks again slimecity and larryderouin it was in fact the transistors.
 
Thanks for the follow up. Care to share what the rookie mistakes were? I know it may be embarassing but some of us (e.g. me) are still learning here.

I'll start - I replaced the protection relay on my QRX-7001 and now I have all four channels reliably, but FL and FR are now switched... #@$%#@%!!! have had no time to investigate what I actually did though.
