Sansui 441 Questions

I picked up a 441 about a week ago, and it has some quirks that I'd like to get sorted. The first thing that caught me off guard was the pop from the speakers the second I turn it on (even if the volume is at 0). I have an AU-4900, and on that one there's a relay that clicks on after a few seconds, which I assume is to prevent the pop from happening, so I just assumed this one would have the same thing.

The second thing is, when listening to FM (only FM, every other input is fine), the left channel doesn't work unless I have the mono button pushed in. It worked fine in stereo up until today... Any ideas are appreciated

I am also experiencing the same on a Sansui 441, in regards to the hard power up?? The unit has worked wonderfully other than the kick start of a Harley... Any ideas or remedies would be greatly appreciated by any whom could throw their suggestions our way!

I use my fully restored 441 everyday and the only remedy to your power on speaker thump is to connect your speakers to position B. In regards to the OP's FM problem it could be anything from a dirty switch to a cold soldered joint, bad coupling cap, transistor or IC.

If he's getting both channels in MONO but not STEREO, I'd look at the Stereo/Mono Switch 1st. Clean the hell out of it, (even to the point of complete teardown and abrasive cleaning of contacts(eraser and DeOxit), and reassembly). I'd also look at the Tape Monitor switch(es).

Find a STRICTLY MONO STATION. Set for MONO operation, then push the Stereo/Mono button into Stereo and see if you get sound from both channels. Could be something in the MPX circuit inhibiting one channel also. MONO Signal comes off the Ratio Detector and Stereo comes out of the MPX.

As for the pop, Replace the Main Filter Cap and the 2 output coupling caps. This is for the most part normal for Cap coupled units. Some pop worse than others even after rehab's. The more the pop, the more DC Voltage is leaking from them. It can be BAD JU-JU for speakers. Also do as OldSansui441 recommends for spkr hookup. Put them on "B" and don't turn to "B" immediately. Turn on to 1st selection, wait 5 seconds for voltages to stabilize then turn to "B".
