Sansui 5000A Left Channel Troubles

Hey Community,

When I picked up a Sansui 5000A (w/ F6013 driver boards) about 6 months ago, I noticed the left channel buzzed a bit more than the right, and intensity of the constant hiss/buzz increased when the I turned the treble knob past a certain point. This wasn't a huge problem until yesterday, when the volume suddenly increased (with no adjusting), followed by a pop, then intermittent static. Tested the B speaker inputs: same problem. Listened with headphone jack: same problem. Hooked the speakers up to my Denon receiver: no problem.

From that I concluded it must be the Sansui. From that description, can anyone diagnose this? I'll probably have to take it to a shop since I have zero knowledge/experience/training repairing electronics, any advice?

What input device(s) was being used (Phono, tuner, Aux)? Does it occur with no input at all? Does it occur with the volume at minimum?

I've worked through a 3000A (same vintage, same design) and this is probably not a unit in which to train oneself. Nonetheless, performing a few basic checks could be revealing, and at the very least might be helpful in selecting a qualified repair shop.

First, do you have a voltmeter/multimeter available? It might be helpful to disconnect the unit from power and inspect the rear panel speaker fuses.

It may also be necessary to remove the bottom to perform a few resistance measurements, specifically the output capacitors, power supply components, and possibly the output transistors.
 
This happened while using the A tape monitor input as an Aux input, connected via RCA cable to my computer. It occurs on Phono too, or with no input. Volume has no effect on static, which is present at minimum level.

It's changed from intermittent listening-level static to a constant, quieter static at low volume or no input. Also, as of tonight, music from the left channel is considerably louder than the right.

I don't have any of those instruments, but I'll look into if it'll allow me to get better service. Thanks for your response.
 
Check if your Sansui uses the 2sa798 transistors. Many Sansui use them and they fail the way you describe. I've fixed a Sansui A40 recently with a similar problem.

If you open the cover you'll recognize them. It's a 5 leads transistor.

Dirty, and speaker relays can cause noises too.

None of these things would cause the bad channel to be louder. Could be a leaky cap in the feedback loop.
 
Sorry, I've ignored that sympthom, concentrated on the noises... Also, looking at the picts, the unit is older than what I thought. You can ignore my advice.
 
Thanks for the responses, I'll post an update when it's resolved. Any other suggestions are welcome.
