Sansui 5000X output transistors and driver boards

Original outputs on the 5000X? The Service manual lists 2sc1079 or 2sc1116

I have a 5000X with four matching DTS-402 outputs. They look to be of similar age to the other components inside the receiver. Could the DTS-402 be original, or a factory revision or replacement of some sort?

My 5000X also has the revised F-6013 driver boards. Would those boards be original factory installs, or done later at a Sansui service center?

I see what is almost certainly a date code on the output transistors '6945' probably indicating a production date of '1969 week 45'. I think it is likely they were original fit, or possibly changed when the unit was retrofitted, if not done during manufacture.

Production dates for 5000X's are a little later in 1971 & 1972 according to the database. We know that 5000X's were retro-fitted with F-6013 boards, at authorised Sansui Service Centres, but I am not sufficiently acquainted with that model to know if they were actually produced with the F-6013 board. Reference to the Sansui Serial Number Database, or someone more in the know might disclose if this was the case.

  • FAQ 15: How do I tell what year my Sansui equipment was manufactured?

Easy! The serial numbers on most Sansui equipment follows a standard;

FF Y MM ####

where FF = a Factory Assembly Line number
Y = last digit of the year of manufacture (you need to know the first year a unit was built - see the Sansui Database reports)
MM = the month of build where 01 = January and 12 = December

The remaining 3 or 4 digits are sequentially applied on the line in sequence.

Example:

AU-999 Serial Number is: 222010985

Manufacturing line #: 22
Year: 1972 (first year for the AU-999 was 1969)
Month: January
Serial component: 0985
From what I've read on AK and other sites only early 5000X were shipped with the problematic F-1040 boards. The serial number on the unit will have a date code, but I do not have any idea when the switch to the F-6013 took place. Post #5 on Sansui FAQ and more, quoted above, shows how to interpret the serial number.
Do not be too concerned on whether or not some components on your unit don't match the manual. I've got two 5000As which don't match on all components, even having at least one entirely different board, and neither completely matches the manual.

I have several 5000X schematics in pdf format, one of which shows the F-6013 board. The others have F-1040-1. These appear to be scans of the schematic that came in the envelope glued to the bottom of these units.

The 2SC1116 should work well, just FYI. 2SC1116 is what came originally in the 8080/9090, too. MJE21194 should work, too.

If the boards have been retrofitted it's a good guess that the outputs are replacements too. A close look at the driver boards would probably show the re-soldering and the changes in the circuitry underneath. There is info in the files section here that shows how this was done. I'd guess your receiver has had the upgrades and replacement outputs.

If it failed because it had the F-1040 driver boards and they failed, there’s a good chance that one or more output transistors failed, too. So, that might explain those other outputs, along with the F-6013s. Or, it was preventative, when the F-6013s were retrofitted
Either way, rock on!
