I know that this unit is highly rated as a receiver. I would like to know how good its amplifier section is compared to other brands from the 70's. Thanks.

well, the 5000x is a nice sounding unit that was made in the early 70s. Its a single ended amp with a capacitor coupled output - so your dampening factor and bass response is not as good as the full complementary DC designs that came a year or two later. The the power supply reserve on the 5000x isn't all that great either at only 2200mfd per channel - not a lot of reserve punch and the transformer doesn't supply enough current quickly enough to compensate.

If you're looking for performance from the early 70s timeframe, you're probably better off going with a sansui single digit series like a seven or eight deluxe in a receiver. A pioneer sx 727 or 828 would also have a much better amp than the 5000x - and if you want even better - go with a nice integrated like an pioneer sa-900 or sansui au-999.
