Sansui 5050, tick tick.... tick sound?

Hi Everyone,

I own a Sansui 5050 and looking for advice.

There is a slight tick tick...tick, tick tick...tick sound coming from both speakers when no music is playing.

Slightly more pronounced/louder on the left channel, but also on the right channel as well, just not quite as loud.

I doesnt seem noticeable when music is playing, but hard to tell?

It happens with every set of speakers, so a problem with the 5050.

Otherwise, no issues with this 50 year old stock receiver.

Any ideas?

The tick sound is repeatative.

When you say, "sounds like e bomb." Does that mean something is about to blow up on it?

Also, a relay? Who would I diagnose this?

sounds like the relay. checked the power coming out of the outlet or plug it in somewhere else? might need servicing. new caps and resistors feeding the relay. there are 2 versions; so, beware with the schematic!

I tried plugging it into other outlets, with the exact same results.

Looking at those schematics is so foreign to me...

I more of a visual learner and hands on. I don't know what to look for, meaning what relay in the schematics.

I'd try it at a friend's or relative's away from your area. might just be the power coming out of the outlet. but, considering its age, probably needs servicing.

Would you be able to circle the relay on the image I sent you, this is the inside of my 5050, so I know what to look at?

Just to clarify. The noise is audible from the speakers only, not the 5050 itself. Gets louder as volume is turned up

could be the relay, capacitors and resistors associated with it...something else connected to it. try headphones with speakers disconnected, or with speakers disconnected?

I seem to remember someone reported this fault for an exact or similar model and the fault was located in the Power Supply, and not related to the relay.

IIRC, rebuilding the Power Supply corrected the problem permanently.

I'm almost done servicing one. was surprised how nice and "mellow" it sounds. not the high- pitched metallic or transistorized sound of newer models. very impressed. definitely get it serviced!

It could also be an external RF noise. Years ago I ran into an issue with an early cel phone that would induce a slight ticking type noise in a receiver. Try moving it to a different room.

Ticking is almost always bad transistors. Very common in vintage gear. Probably either preamp or driver board. Lot of bad transistors in the 5050.

Make sure your service guy gets the fusible resistors, they WILL fail sooner rather than later.
