Sansui 551 left hand channel distortion

Picked up a Sansui 551 recently to add to the growing collection, mainly because I have had so much service and enjoyment from my 221. However it quickly became apparent that there was a problem with the left channel, with very noticeable distortion when playing from any source, but not through headphones where everything is fine.
Any suggestions as to cause and a possible solution?!

The first place to start is to give the controls a thorough cleaning. 9 times out of 10 that's all it takes.

So I have thoroughly cleaned and exercised all controls and switches but still have the same distortion on the left hand channel. Where do I go from here? All suggestions welcome...!

The distortion from every source - 'but not with headphones' is a classic indicator of out of spec (low) bias, has the 551 been reconditioned? - it needs it now.

On opening the 551 I couldn't see any evidence of work or modifications that have been carried out. So to recondition - what does this entail?
Love your avatar by the way, part of my childhood!

Well, after ~40 years there are many components inside the unit that have grown tired and will require replacement, oxidisation of contacts also takes its toll. Even semiconductors like transistors and diodes have been shown to get tired and go 'low gain' or 'noisy' or fail completely because of the effects of ageing. It will very likely be the effects of ageing that is causing your problems.

Yes, 'Roobarb and Custard' narrated by Richard Briers ;) - absolutely first class entertainment, appreciated by young and old alike.

Hi,
I know is a long time ago but did you fix the problem? I'm having the same problem.

Thanks,

Ariel

Does the 551 have the same socketed amp board as the 771? If so, remove that board and deoxit the contacts and socket.
