Sansui 551 tuner issue

Just picked up a Sansub 551 for $20. Seller said it turned on, but no sound and tuner signal meter doesn't move. Got it home and just like they said, but plugged in my phone using the aux, and sounds good. It is very dusty inside, but looks like it has led a comfortable life. My question is: Can a beginner (never worked on a receiver) fix the tuner section, and does anyone have any ideas on what the issue is. Thanks in advance for any help.

well if something tunerish went, you need some equipment you might not have...

the xx1 machines are pretty robust and easy to glue stuff in, BUT, its old 1975, and early FM ICs which might be hard to obtain...
 
So I was using the AUX for listening to Pandora at work yesterday, and a cap blew. It was quite impressive, smoke rolling out the top, but amazingly it was still playing music. I dont think I want to spen time/money re-capping this, so i think im going to part it out. Thanks for the reply by the way. After further investigation about the tuner, I found that it was probably a bad power terminal due to the fact that both AM and FM were out, the meter wasnt moving and the FM light was not turning on. Never got around to fixing it.
 
parting out? that is soooo evil. like muscle cars of olde, you only part out when totalled. few bucks parts, few hours time and this is a valuable machine...I know cuz I used to do xx1's all the time and recently the LED converted 331 I did (NBOTL) walked for a goodly sum to an ecstatic owner
 
I agree with quaddriver, they are a nice little receiver and definitely worth looking into, as you have already pointed out the tuner is likely an easier fix if it is a power supply issue on both FM and AM.
 
I’m having the same issue with the AM/FM.
Nothing but a muddled sound, am or fm.
The signal meter did move a few times and that’s it.
Everything else works great and sounds very good.
Phono and Aux work great.

I’m going to start with some cleaning and check things out.
