Sansui 7000/Soundcraftsmen A2502: Huh?

For quite some time we've been quite happy with the combination of either a Sansui 7000 or 9090 paired with Boston Acoustics A400s for large field listening and DCM TimeFrame 600s for near field. On a whim, knowing the A400s are 4 ohm, and contemplating some locally available Polk LSi15s, also 4 ohm, to supplant the DCMs, chose to audition our Soundcraftsmen A2502 as an amp, using the Sansui 7000 as a pre. Wanted to see if the different amp design and 45 additional watts would further open up the BAs.

Imagine my surprise when it resulted in a lifectomy. Perhaps the low end gained a bit of tightness, but negligible at best, while the high end feels stripped of the air and shimmer. Have played three sides of trusted, stylistically different materiel (Fagen Nightfly, Talking Heads Fear of Music, and Karijan/Berlin/Deutche Gramaphone Mahler 5th), all familiar and of sonic integrity. Am going to swap out the A2502 for either a Kenwood or Dimensia (!) 100 watt amp to see if the high end is better.

Wondering if the 2502, not having been used in quite some time is copping an attitude for being neglected, or there may be a deficiency. Or perhaps the moral is if it's not broken, don't fix it (stop considering the Polks?).
We do keep coming back to that Sansui 7000, though. Perhaps there's a reason.

Thoughts (besides seeing a therapist)?

As I am now the proud owner of a 7000 also I feel I am headed down the same path. Will be pairing them with BA150's. Will follow up.
