Sansui 7000 versus Seven

Alright my dudes, I have two derelict Sansui units - a 7000 and a Seven. The Seven if missing all its knobs, but it appears that the 7000 knobs will work just fine on these. Both need major work (which I will be doing myself). My question is this - which one of these is more worthy of being the recipient unit? I may get lucky and find a set of knobs on ebay for cheap. But as an initial effort, which of these would you rehab first? I note the 7000 seems to have been sold only in military Px's (which maybe makes it a nicer unit to to keep), and is capacitor coupled. I guess the Seven usesa protection relay (I have to check on that). Any opinions? Both units seems very nicely built, solid, dense.

Tough call. I like the cap coupled sound of that era, so I'd probably choose to give priority to the 7000. If we were talking about an Eight Deluxe instead of Seven, I'd probably favor it over the 7000. You say both need major work, anything more specific that might inform the decision to choose one over the other?

Actually, I take back everything I have said. Somehow I have blundered. They are BOTH model Sevens! The one I thought was a 7000 also has a protection relay in it (discovered after I opened the bottom). And, of course, they both say Seven on the back.

BUT the weird part is that the face plates are NOT The same. As you can see, one of them says "Stereo Receiver Seven" on the glass. The other has no writing on the glass whatsoever. Very strange. Anyway, they are identical inside. And the backs both say Seven. AND the serial numbers are very close together. I believe both were manufactured in 1972 within one month of each other if you go by the numbers.

Well, in that case, restore the nicest of the two, using the poorer one as a parts donor. One is obviously later production, having the protect relay. I'd figure the glass got replaced (or the screen print somehow removed) on the unit that is lacking the model ID on the front panel.

Perhaps the second unit is worthy of restoration as well. But did finding a deal on a complete set of knobs is a pretty tall order these days, and may make the project on economical if it needs a lot of additional work.

No, to be clear - they both have the relay. i was mistake in my original post. They are identical inside. I will restore the nicest of the two. Whichever one I do, I'll transplant the faceplate with the writing on it to the better one if needed. Economics are important, but I don't rehab to sell. I rehab to keep - I lkeep all my stuff. I guess if I decide to only do one of them, I may part out the other. I'm unsure. A knob set will be a tall order. It's funny - sometimes you can get lucky and fund a whole set for $40. Sometimes they are $40 a knob!!

Ok. If you have room to store the parts unit, do so. It still has all its switches and pots, and those alone are invaluable for future use, or for selling/horse trading for other goodies. If at least one channel is still good, that gives you a set of output transistors that are likely ok for reuse.

I'm pretty sure all the Sevens have a protection relay but none of the 7000s have it. It's an older cap coupled design. Looking at the serial numbers they were both built on the same production line one month apart. You will be happy with either of them. Restore the one that's in better condition.

I'd like to add the serial numbers to the database but can't tell which is which from the photos.
