Sansui 7070 or Technics SA-800?

Yeah, I just looked up the 800 specs. Seems nice ... might have to check it out. The 7070 just sounds so good though

Very interesting comparison. I also like the sound of this Sansui series very much, right starting from the 5050. Although I have a huge receiver collection, I've never had the chance to pick up one of those Technics. I do own only a few Quads from Technics/Panasonic.
So why don't you get this SA800 and compare it directly with the Sansui?
Except the price is too high.
And we would be glad to share your experience here.
If the Technics is fine - keep him and let the Sui go. If the 7070 is better, sell the Technics - or keep both because its a rare unit.

The SA 800 has more power, but switches on them are a major issue. Tuner and phono very good on it. Sansui better built but less powerful. Both have good things going for them.

Dollars to doughnuts, the Sansui will sound better. The SA-x00 series Technics just aren't up to their contemporary Japanese massmarket brethren in any way shape or form as far as I am concerned. The Technics receivers of that model era sound thin and two-dimensional to me. Pioneer rather famously directly contrasted the construction values of the Technics of that era with their own receivers.
YMMV, of course. I don't have a dog in this fight; there's lots of better sounding stuff than either (again, to my ears and tastes).

I am playing with a Techinics SA 5570 Kenwood KR 7600 and Luxman L 430 (intergrated) and I am pretty picky and I have to say the Technics is the most balanced of the 3. The Luxman is warm but somewhat thin, a new one on me. My wife even commented that . The kenwood is richer then the Technics but seems to be somewhat peaky and sounds like it is throwing the sound at you. The Technics is a touch warm and not as detailed as the other two (its there just not shoved down your throat) but sounds the most natural and full. It also has a vey good sense of PRAT

Generally the Sansui sound is a bit more "warm and neutral" and the SA-800 is a bit more punchy and more forward sounding.
The one thing I enjoyed about my SA-800 (have since given it to my brother for his B'day last year) was the styling. It really is quite a good looking receiver IMHO.:scratch2: One of the nicer looking rigs from the late 70's.:thmbsp:

Sansui 7070
I have had the pleasure of owning the 7070 and the L100T3. I feel strongly that after a long listeneing session you will prefer the 7070. The JBL's benefit strongly from warmer equipment in IMHO. Let us know what you find!
