Sansui 800 headphone jack crackling

I recently picked up a Sansui 800 and when I plug any pair of headphones in the jack I get loud crackling from the drivers. They will do this even if the receiver is turned off and unplugged.

I've sprayed deoxit in there but it doesn't seem to help. All I have to do is touch the jack with the headphone adapter and and I get crackling.

The weird thing is, the headphone jack does work. If I put my headphones all the way in and play music they sound fine. Even weirder is once the headphones are plugged in, I can unplug and plug them in with NO CRACKLING as many times as I want. But after a long hour period it goes back to its one time crackling when I insert the headphones.

All the controls are perfect on this unit, no noise or crackling from them.

Any ideas?

Open it up and look at solder where the headphone jack is. Is the solder cracked? If it is put a soldering iron on it with some solder and seal cracks. You dont have a soldering iron. Take a knife from SILVERWARE drawer and heat it over stove til red hot then proceed.

Ok, thanks. I did have it open and sprayed a little deoxit in a few places where the wires from the jack lead to. I didn't notice anything wrong with the solder but I shall take a closer look.

Does it not seem unusual to you that I would get crackling even with the unit unplugged? Has that happened to anyone else before?

The 800 is a capacitor coupled design. So for a short while after power down (unplugged) you will get sound as the main power supply caps C001 & C003 bleed down. Normal operating condition.

Ah, ok. One mystery solved. Thanks.

Anyway, I'm going to buy a pair of crappy headphones on craigslist and use them for testing. Don't want to torture my good ones anymore.

You don't spray deoxit on wires.. Spray the deoxit into the headphone jack then plug and unplug the headphones a dozen times.

I didn't spray the wires per-say. I sprayed the 'component' that the wires were attached to, which I believe was part of the selector switch. I sprayed quite a bit in the jack but nothing has changed. I did not do the plug/unplug thing while spraying. I'll wait until I get a crap pair of headphones before I do that.

BTW, I have DeoxIT D100. Should get D5 or something else?
