Sansui 8080DB Score

Appassionato circa audio
I picked up a Sansui 8080DB last night at a thrift for 20 bucks.
The only problem I could find is someone peeled off the wood grain vinyl. After I plugged it in and listened, one of the channels wasn't working. I jiggled a couple knobs and it came on. Works perfect now. I will be cleaning the knobs and switches and buying the vinyl to restore this puppy.
I know Parts express has the vinyl, but does anyone which color closest matches the original?

Personally I don't think I'd worry about matching. Part of the pleasure is being able to pick something that pleases you...

I don't know which would match better, if at all, but the red maple and the cherry are both very nice. They're on sale for $11/roll until the 15th, too.

Bookasan,
The Partsexpress cherry is very dark red. I have an unopened roll that I bought to recover a 8080DB. I don’t like the color. It’s just too red in my opinion to look good with the blue meters and green panel lights. In looking at the color chart I think the Teak would be the closest match to the original walnut. I’m not sure why they don’t have a walnut vinyl. It’s the most common covering used on speakers and equipment. If you are down in the Long Beach area, you’re welcome to stop by to look at it. Hell, for 11 bucks you can have it.

If they did a good job of pulling the vinyl off of the unit and didn't rip up the wood, just sand it a little and stain the wood with a walnut stain. It will have a pine grain but accually looks pretty good and its a cheep fix. If you wanted to recover it sometime later you still could.

You could also go the expensive route and recover it with real wood veneer.

Funny You should mention that. Over the weekend, I took another look at the receiver. They peeled off the top layer of the vinyl and left the tan colored part of the vinyl stuck to the cabinet.
A very carefuly peeled away the vinyl and I didn't peel away any of the wood. I tried sanding a little spot and it was very easy to smooth out. My thought was to sand it, stain it, and hit it with Deft.
I will post pics once it is done.

I bet you will be pleased with the results. If you are not sure what color you want to use or how it will look, stain spots on the inside of the cabinet. It will give you a good idea of how the stain will take.
