Sansui 881 or G-7000

I recently picked up a nice Sansui 881 and have a chance to pick up a G-7000 that is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from me. I have never heard the G-7000 and was wondering how it compared to the 881. I also have a 2000A that I really like. One of the reasons why I ask is I have a inner ear issue and for the last couple of months my hearing has been off terribly so I would love any ones thoughts.

Thanks

All three are very different in sound and build quality as far as Sansui goes.

The 2000A is cap coupled, the 881 is on the cheap side, and the G series is arguably the best.

Thanks

So if I was to pick one over the out of the 881 or G-7000, the G-7000 would be the better of the two receivers.

881 1974-5. G7000 '78. 881 has a more tube-like sound. Nothing cheap about its build quality at all. The G-7000 sounds very clean because it was designed during the distortion wars. The 7070 was the equivalent in-between model.

I have restored several of each and a ton of 771's. The G-7000 is by far the mos cost-reduced model. Traces on the circuit boards very delicate. Output transistors have plastic parts that break.

They all sound great with slight differences.

I'd call the vinyl wrap on the 881 cheap. And the fact that it was the only unit in the lineup to have both tuning meters instead of one. It was a cost cutting lineup.

And I don't know what G-7000 you've had, but the output transistors are metal TO-3's and every one I've worked on had great traces....I just don't think your unit was kept well at some point in it's life.

Thanks for all the input, I postponed our meeting tomorrow with all the virus scare going around he lives in a metropolitan area with more virus cases and my wife asked me not to go. It maybe a mistake me not going tomorrow, I am still on the fence. He is asking $350 but will take $275. He claims it works properly just needs to be cleaned.

275 for a G-7000??? Virus or no virus, get that thing.

WE almost never see the G series for sale down here in Aussie, for 275 I might be able to go the shipping fees and still have change from $1K ......grab some PPE and go get it...

Well thanks for all the replies, the seller agreed to meet me half way and I picked it up today. It is a little dirty and needs a cleaning. We hooked it up with a pair of speakers I brought and a power inverter. He told me before we met the pots needed to be cleaned and that every thing worked. Everything seemed to function the pots definitely need to be cleaned the volume was lower on one side, the balance was so staticky I am hoping some deoxit will clear the volume issue up. The Antenna socket is cracked, he tried glueing it, which kept the socket together but there enough play that the antenna doesn’t stay inserted correctly. Since there was the volume issue and the cracked antenna socket he accepted $250. After we did the deal he admitted someone had given it to him.

When you use the input selector is there a corresponding light that indicates your selection on this model? The lights appear to work but I don’t see anything light up when I switch inputs.

Thanks

I took it apart tonight and sprayed deoxit in the balance and volume pots and it helped with the static but not with the lower volume on the left side. The balance was so bad that I really thought deoxit would solve the volume difference. I took the top and bottom off and could not get to the treble and bass pots and I didn’t try the cleaning the push buttons yet. I will give those a try tomorrow and might spray the balance again.

Well I just noticed if I turn it on mono I get the same loudness out of both channels. If I turn it to stereo the volume drops on the left side,
