Sansui 9090 volume pot

I did a search and came up with a few answers but the usual Deoxit isn't working all that well and I've got the "scratchy" thing going on again when I rotate the volume knob. Maybe I'm not getting the Deoxit precisely to where it should go but man, that's a tough place to get to. Any other ideas on how to get the thing clean would be greatly appreciated. Also, am I not using the proper cleaner? Or, should I be using something in addition to the Deoxit like a lubricator?

Having said that, I remember another AKer not that long ago describing taking the pot out and disassembling it to get to all the places that one might otherwise miss. Can anyone remember that thread and if so, link to it? Thanks all.....carry on amigos

This one that you already posted in?

YES! That's the one! Boy, funny I can remember what I did on my 10th birthday but not something a little less than 2 years ago! And yes, it was fine for a while but the scratchy noise has come back and I'm just not happy with it like this. Thank you Scott! I will again study @tnsilver's work (and yours) and see if I can manage this job. I am hoping that thread also talked about what to use to clean things with......wish me luck amigo!

.....AND, now I remember after re-reading the thread that it was YOU that drilled the threaded hole in the spindle at the rear and held it all together with a small screw rather than using JB Weld! I'm having cataract surgery in a couple weeks and when that is done and I'm healed up, and when I see what kind of vision I am left with, I'm going to tempt myself into trying this job. So, don't go anywhere as I'm sure I will need support, lots of it!!! I've done some other things that I was pretty intimidated by at first, just takes me a little while to get up the courage.

Thank you again, Scott, for bringing my attention to that thread. I was really hoping that the D5 would have solved my problems for good but like you, it was only a matter of time before they resurfaced again. The thing is, it is not very loud "scratchy" at all and in fact, it's usually when I'm listening with my headphones on that I hear it quite a bit. Without the phones, it is barely noticeable......so not a fire I'm in a hurry to put out, so to speak.

Did you use Deoxit F100L for lubrication and it didn't yield the expected results? Or did you use a different type of Deoxit?

Hi @Copanel, I used the D5 for cleaning and just sprayed that as best as I could into the small holes that I think are there for that purpose. I did not put any lubrication in there though.....

You shouldn't use just D5 for carbon tracks; I use F5 for cleaning and lubrication during maintenance, and I recently bought F100L to lubricate heavily worn carbon tracks.
I wish you success with the eye surgery.

That's probably a very good idea......I wonder, do you just put that through the little holes in the housing where you spray the D5, or do you have to take everything apart in order to use it?

Dismantling it would be best.
Cleaned the surface with F5 or D5, then applied a drop of F100L to the carbon surface.
f5 can be sprayed through that hole, but f100l would require disassembly to apply.

That sounds like good advice amigo.....I am thinking about doing this job after my eye surgery, so when the snow flies more than likely. That will give me plenty of time to do more research. For example, I'm not really sure how to get the whole unit out of the receiver in order to dismantle it.
