Sansui 9090DB Poor FM Reception

Hi guys,

I have my Sansui recently restored working great but I get very poor FM reception, I only get 2 or 3 stations at least.

Where should I look? Is there any calibration that I need to do??

I don't see any FM antenna connected at all, that's the AM ferrite bar antenna.

Try connecting an FM dipole antenna to the two terminals marked 300 ohms - or heck just cut a six foot piece of speaker wire and connect it to one of the 300 ohm terminals.

It's amazing you get any reception at all with no FM antenna connected.
 
Then again, a lot of Sui tuners of that era were pretty weak on reception on a good day. Most of mine needed a lot of help with a signal amplifier and an external antenna array.

Then again, with that added, pretty much any of them (including the current QRX 9001) can drag the world in kicking and screaming ... ;-}

PS ... I don't mess with tuner sections if I can help it. You need special equipment to do it right, and just the smallest tweak can pretty much brick it till a pro does it right. Truth be told, even cleaning one can be an interesting adventure.

The QRX's had awful tuners, very weak. The 8001 and 9001 have one of the worst tuners Sansui ever made, which makes no sense as those are TOTL units, not sure why they dropped the ball there, the 9090DB has a great tuner, all the G series have great tuners....
I have aligned most Sansui tuners and this is my findings on the matter.

In this case here, picking up 3 stations with no antenna attached at all is actually pretty good!!

Try and get a set of telescoping TV style "rabbit ears"

This works way better than speaker wire - the speaker wire is just to test it.

A dipole antenna will work well too.

If you're in an urban area and care only about local reception, the speaker wire may be enough. You'll know the antenna is good enough if the signal meter goes to at least half way up the dial, the stereo indicator light is on, and there's no distortion or noise. You can use the signal meter to adjust your antenna as well, just adjust it until the reading is highest.
