Hello,
I am looking to purchase my first Sansui and am thinking of a receiver such as the 9090DB unit. I am wondering about the tuner section. I listen to a lot of FM and it would mean a lot to have a great AM section. I would like to field opinions from you guys on this. Appreciate your help and feedback.

It is just my opinion… but I think that the Sansui tuner,(in receivers) as a whole are superior to any others in the price range and better than some that cost much more.

9090db

Thanks Peter. For many years I have owned FM only tuners but there are some AM programs that I would like to start listening to. Plus the fact that I am needing a receiver. The 9090DB is probably the most beautiful receiver out there.

When you have the chance please give me your thoughts on this receiver or alternative Sansui units. Many thanks my friend.

The only tuner I consistenly listen to is the one in the 9090DB. Almost daily. It just works wonderfully for me. I have the matching tuner for the Sansui AU-D11, the very well rated TU-S9, it sounds pretty darn good and also had a TU-555. I've had other tuners and receivers from other brands as well. The only Sansui that I've had/have that comes close is the 8080DB. Personally I just really like how it sounds and it pulls in stations easily.

That said the 9090 "DB" version does have it's share of problems, especially in the dolby board and the solder seems to loosen up. Mine had a recent tune up and I'm hoping it will out live me. :)

I'm no expert but my 8080db has an outstanding tuner;it's clear and crisp and picks up signals that I can't get with any other tuner. I would however recommend going without the dolby. the 8080 and the 9090 come without the dolby feature which causes more problems then it's worth. The dolby pots tend to corrode and are very difficult to replace. It can be cleaned but is kind of a hassle.

Out of all my Sansui equipment, my G5700 receiver, and my TU-7500 seem to pick up AM stations better than the rest. I don't usually listen to AM, all my talk radio is streamed online, and I have much better luck with that :)

I had a 9090DB with a plain old AM loop antenna. With the antenna, I could pick up a station 50 miles away. It wasn't crystal clear..... but then again...... it's AM :)

Thank you all for your help. Since the Dolby may be a problem I will look for a 9090 or 8080. Maybe keep a lookout for a "G" model. I appreciate the help.
