[Sansui AU-5500] mistake in title

Greetings Audiophiles,

I have a new "keeper" for my room and I´M IN LOVE WITH it!! So far, I haven´t heard a Sansui I didn´t like. I got the AU-5500 along with the Tuner Tu-5500 and the sound is so nice, rich, smooth and balanced that I don´t even use that wonderful triple tone control.

I would like to know if I could find a LED replacement for the Red pilot light since the one that is in there is literally blinding me. The part number in the Service Manual says it´s a Light Emitted Diode (SDB-501A-RD) and would like to order an equivalent from Digi-Key.

This is what I have now. As you can see, some "Einstein" did some surgery to it and put in another LED light. They connected another pair of cables and taped it.
The one that they put in is working fine but it is so bright that it hurts my eyes. I guess they didn´t have anything else to replace the original.

Am I in the right section? Are these leds standard? Would like to remove those cables and put in the new light in it´s original "holder" (which is there). Any help would be appreciated!!

It looks like they don't sell plain bare wire ended LED's any more, :idea: :mad: they want you to buy ready mounted LED's

Another suggestion: put a larger dropping resistor inline with the LED to decrease it's brightness. Essentially, this would act as a dimmer. Not that another LED couldn't be found, but that may require some experimentation for brightness to your taste anyway. Looks like a T-1 (3mm) bog standard LED to me, and probably needs to be that same size to fit the plastic bezel in the front panel properly.

A very sharp amp, by the way. Always liked this series a lot.
 
Who knew they are now called 'LED Emitters' ? - I saw that and ignored it. :rolleyes:

Regarding the OP's situation, it looks like 'Einstein' has run a new feed to the replacement LED, heaven knows why. Maybe the replacement is a 'Super Bright' type LED drawing too much current for the original protection circuit linked LED supply? - some good suggestions given for a resolution.

However, easy to fix once you find the correct size/type LED and reconnect it to the original supply. ;)

Since they are pennies each, I will get a few and see which one fits the best. I can always try the resistor method as well but I would prefer to do without one. Ideally, I would like to match the brightness of the pilot light of the TU-5500--which is a GREAT TUNER by the way. Excellent sensitivity and they go so well together (obviously same series)!

Here´s what I´m talking about. The current light that´s in there is almost a flashlight. You can imagine how bright that looks at night. By the way, the SOUND of the Sansui 5500 and the 2 Fisher speakers (XP7 & XP55b) in inverted stacked mode, is WONDERFUL. Can listen to it 24/7 without ANY listening fatigue!!! Now, I´m starting to understand what is that "SYNERGY" a lot of you are talking about. Oh, how nice it is to be ILLUMINATED, :rflmao::rflmao:

Last little thing still pending for this little gem is that pilot light. The old one died and now I have absolutely no light. I couldn´t find a 3mm one--which is what looks like the size of the original--so I used a 5mm.

There was plenty of corrosion around the area. Don´t know if that´s because of the replacement light.

1. Checked the original 2 pins on F-2416 for the pilot light and something is wrong. Checked the wires, resoldered and tried the 5mm led and nothing. Looks like there´s no voltage.

2. I disconnected those 2 wires and connected them to pins 24 and 24 on F-2091 board (same as before). It works but it is blindingly bright. Even more than the previous one.
