Sansui AU-7700 problems.

1 - by differential amp 1st stage, you mean the tone control board? ie: where the tone control switches are? sorry, I've not done much work on stereo amps. most of my (limited) experience is in old tube guitar amps. This is the first old stereo amp i've done more than replace a power cord or lamps in.

2 - so I'm guessing it's safe to run this amp for a while with no load hooked up, just headphones? Again, coming from tube guitar amps - that's a no-no as far as I know. Just want to make sure I don't make a stupid mistake.

I do have another amp that can separate the pre and power (2000a) - but that's my main system and is in constant use.. so I'll have to try this first so I don't have to disconnect everything and hump it down to the workshop. :)

Differential amp first stage in on the driver board

It is safe to run solid state amps without a speaker load, kind of opposite with a tube amp

The board with the differential pair is F2097 the one on top towards the rear. It has the clear plastic cover relay on it

Right on, thanks! Think I am almost ready to place my order with mouser. Just trying to figure out what caps i should replace and what to replace them with.
 
You can read up on capacitor replacements and opinions. I have a real nice tester so I don't replace all power supply or DC filter caps unless they don't test good. I usually replace the coupling caps (signal passing) when I can, especially if I find originals OOT. I use mostly Nichicon FineGold, but others prefer the KT, or Bipolar.. Coupling caps are usually 0.47uf, 1uf, 2,2uf 3.3uf 4.7uf, and 10uf.
But you should fix your problem before doing any recap
