Please be patient with me as I am fairly new to this game. I have come across a Sansui AU-X1 that claims to be operational ("amazing shape" according to the seller, exterior pics do indicate this) and that I can get for a surprisingly low dollar. I have also heard that the earlier models were essentially a ticking time bomb with some heavy oscillation problems but later ones had this corrected. Is there a serial number reference to determine the older from the newer? Also, aside from typical cap, transistor, diode, etc. decay over time would it be safe to say that if it has not encountered any oscillation problems by now then it should be good to go?

Yes, if the cosmetics are excellent and the unit is intact it is a good deal, in fact too good a deal to believe, even if nonfunctional. Aside from the fact that that this is an old unit and will need a restoration and that it is difficult to find someone to work on it, there are at least three known issues as you will see by looking at the Sansui forum:
1. The black flag capacitors that must all be replaced since they can lead you to lose your output tansistors.
2. The output transistors which are nearly unobtainable. It would seem unlikely that these are intact in a $300 unit. I haven't checked recently, but replacements were available from a well respected member on that auction site The price for a new set is a bit over $200, if you can find them and counterfeits abound. If these were intact, it could justify the price.
3. The instability/oscillation issue which can lead you to lose your output transistors. I have no technical background but it appears from various threads that if the black flag capacitors issue is addressed, modifications recommended on this site by dr. audio made, and grounding issues attended to that this will be stable.
