HI Guys, I have come across both a Sansui AU 555A and a Sansui AU 3900 wattage is pretty much the same so what other main differences are there ? I will be using a Technics SL 1400 TT so phono is obviously important also I can only afford one atm. Thanks. Groovetube.

If it were me I'd go for the AU-555a, I feel like there is more quality put into that unit, but I have no experience with the AU-3900 so I can't comment from a personal perspective. They are both good units, so I don't think you could go wrong.

I've owned a AU 555a and (now sold) miss it. It has a big footprint for a smaller amp. I'm guessing it'll have a warmer sound than the AU 3900? I've not heard the 3900 either but my friend had a 5900 and it sounded more transistor like to my ears. Go for the AU 555a.

I have both, recapped. The 3900 sounds really stunning to me but I'd prefer the 555A, sounds warmer and 'deeper'. The 555A probably needs more work though, had to replace several transistors as well as caps to get her working 100% again.

I have original AU4900 and a AU555 (not A) planning to recap and restore both. Have run the 4900 in my system for a while and have been quite happy with the sound but would like to have it back to spec due to its age. Couldnt resist a 555 as it one of the earliest solid states from Sansui I'm told.. have high hopes for this one. Alienz what transistors did you end up replacing on your 555A?

I replaced the two that are hiding under the main amp board (F1266), one was causing bias to go haywire. I replaced the flying saucer style transistors on that same board as well but more as a precaution, they dont age well, Sansui replaced them in later versions.

Another problem mine had when I bought was a very bloated bass sound on one channel, recapping the tone board fixed that.
