Good luck. Been on the same quest for years. Sansui had multiple versions of the 717 CD player. I have a black face A717D Extra. And a Champaign color face CD A717DR. As far as I've understood my blackfaced CD-α717DR is the 220V version, while the silverfaced CD-α717DR is the Japanese-only 100V version.
=> What do experts say if I find a junk silverfaced 717DR for cheap and swap the silver faceplate+buttons + silver coverplate + silver CD-sled to my blackfaced one?

I should think that's entirely possible. Have an old Denon CD player here that I swapped the cosmetic parts to make it champaign instead of black. Provided the model number is the same, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. Added bonus is you get a spare VFD panel and some extra circuit boards.
I got one more 717dr with 230V in black housing, and interestingly the thing has a blue display, not the normal orange display (matching the colours of the alpha907DR amp) that I've seen for a lot of 230V black housed players. However, blue and orange appear for both. B
I've also basically seen all silver-housed players with blue display only AND with 100V only. Never with 230V, never with orange display.

* And is blue or orange the original colour for the display (I remember reading that an additional blue or orange foil makes it for "the other colour")?

I know this is a very late reply, but I just saw this thread.
@peterott had asked how the different display colors were achieved. The native color of the VFD is pale blue. The amber/orange color is done by placing a deep orange tinted plastic filter over the display. Other filter colors can be used to make the display green, deep blue, or even near white (by using a pale rose colored filter). These filters are similar in composition to theatre lighting gels, but are usually made of a bit heavier plastic.

Thank you @Sansuiman. I somehow remember having read something similar some time ago somewhere. Pale blue - like in the pics above - being the original and then there is the bright orange and a bright blue created by your mentioned plastic filters.
From my 3 pics above, there is one missing with a deep blue display, which I have already seen as well ("bright blue" may fit even better).
The silver one is such a beauty. Was recently selling a Technics SL-PS7 on German kleinanzeigen and the buyer saw my silver CD717DR. First we crosschecked on the SL-PS7 the DSP-function by toggling ON/OFF/... and recognised not too much difference. Only in the bass range of "Any colour you like" from Pink Floyd a bit more of difference was heard when the spacey cascades of keyboards came in.
Then we switched to the CD-717DR and the sound was instantly better by far in all frequencies bottom-mid-high. Far more open, surprising for me as well to get so much difference (amp was an AU-919 with Techncis SB-M500M2 speakers). Oh man, the buyer offered me a huge sum for the CD717DR but I couldn't let the silver one go. So he took the SL-PS7 as planned, but wasn't happy after seeing what was on the table as well - but not for sale.

I'm always careful not to have gear I don't intend or want to sell visible in pictures of gear I post for sale. Also careful not to have other gear on display if someone comes to pick up an item they've purchased in person. Have learned from experience that failing to do so invites unsolicited offers and awkward situations when I insist that something isn't for sale.
